I've talked to all of you at some point or another about the Miami Day program, and I'm going to continue to talk about it because so far we have had 40 leaders from across the state attend a two-day training, and I'm happy to say that our senator here in Albuquerque, Antoinette City O Lopez will be attending.

The next training is October 10 and 11th, and I sincerely hope that someone from this group does make a point to attend.

Local Government Coordinating Commission Meeting - August 23, 2024

  • Introduction of Dr. Lindstrom and New Behavioral Health Division: Dr. Lindstrom, the new Deputy County Manager for Behavioral Health, introduced the Bernalillo County Division of Behavioral Health, established by ordinance on June 25, 2024. He outlined plans for three advisory bodies, a strategic plan due by November 30, 2024, and efforts to leverage Medicaid and create a provider network. He emphasized collaboration with the city and APS.
  • Opioid Settlement Strategic Planning Update: Julie Ron from Vital Strategies presented on the strategic planning process for opioid settlement funds. Key deliverables include a rapid landscape analysis, extensive community engagement (5 town halls reaching 430 people, 17 listening sessions with 143 participants, a survey of 691 people who use drugs, and 169 online survey responses). The initial strategic plan will be submitted October 16, 2024. The commission agreed to hear the plan first at its October 24 meeting, before presentations to the county commission and city council.
  • Gateway First Responders Receiving Area Update: Terry Schlader presented on the new program, open for two months, which provides a "fourth option" for first responders to bring individuals in behavioral health crisis who are not eligible for emergency room, jail, or left on the street. The center has served over 70 adults, including 4 families. 70% of guests have been connected to services, with 50% connected to long-term services. The facility operates 18 hours a day, staffed by community health workers. Commissioners praised the health equity focus and discussed expanding to 24/7 operations.
