  • Oliver (resident; lives a few houses down; parent of two): Expressed support and appreciation for the City’s investment; noted surprise at the level of outside planning/contracting and stated willingness to volunteer time/effort if needed.
  • Mimi (resident; lives down the hill; parent): Expressed support and excitement for a walkable neighborhood destination; thanked Henry and stated interest in participating in next steps and providing input.

Discussion Items

  • Oak Knoll Improvement Project – Design Consultant Recommendation
    • Staff described the Oak Knoll cul-de-sac opportunity site (about 3,000 sq. ft.), identified in the Parks, Recreation & Open Space Master Plan as filling a neighborhood park gap.
    • A subcommittee (including Commissioners Michaels and Whitmore and staff) reviewed three proposals and recommended Callander Associates.
    • Reasons cited for the recommendation included: a professional/complete proposal; a community engagement approach (including on-site walk-and-talk style outreach and flexibility for additional outreach/presentations); and being the most cost-effective option.
    • Commissioners noted the proposer felt aligned with “Belmont” and that the decision was difficult because all proposals were strong.
    • Staff noted site constraints such as no existing water/irrigation, which would limit landscaping/amenities; and intent to retain all or nearly all mature trees subject to health assessment.
    • Commissioners briefly discussed future park naming as a potential part of the process (no decision made).

Department Updates (Parks & Recreation)

  • Recap of Santa Firehouse event (including a new Santa, Grinch appearance, toy donations).
  • Updates on Happy Hydrants (some completed; applications reopened) and Utility Box art (applications reopened) as Centennial activities.
  • Summer hiring underway: camp counselors (Camp SOAR), pool managers, lifeguards, swim instructors; plus youth roles (CITs, swim aides).
  • Centennial swag shop launched; commissioners discussed potential feedback on item/logo sizing and adding different products.
  • Upcoming events:
    • Music & Open Mic Night at Twin Pines Manor (Jan. 24).
    • MLK Poetry & PSA contest submissions due Feb. 2.
    • Lunar New Year celebration on Feb. 8.
    • Superstars & Sweetheart Dance on Feb. 13 (registration noted as low; encouragement to register).
  • Centennial programming additions discussed: goal of “100 celebrations” around town (residents can register gatherings; City may provide small swag/napkins), parade planning, walking tour, upcoming City Hall display model, and local-history podcasts (including historic 75th anniversary recordings).

Key Outcomes

  • Approved the consultant recommendation to proceed with Callander Associates for the Oak Knoll Improvement Project design process (6–0).
  • Staff to begin contract approval steps and develop a project schedule following Commission approval.
  • Noted that the January meeting served as the consolidated meeting for January/February, with the next regular meeting planned for the first Wednesday in March.
