Meeting Transcript
Accurately shows the citizens what we're doing with their tax dollars and that they're being used to accomplish the projects that we told them we were going to do. It's been it's been great working with the people involved. I've had a chance to work across many different departments. Um when I first came on board uh financial services department was kind of siloed. We operated in the background and we just got all the reporting done and our budgeting done and uh for the end of the year. Now we have interacted much more with the departments, built some relationships so that we can find out what they need from us, what kind of reporting, what access to what information. And that allows us to get that in their hands and to be able to um to get them the information they need to make decisions. And that's been really uh fun for me to get involved with all the city departments, find out exactly what they do, the services they provide to the city. Um so I'd say that's been one of the most rewarding things is just getting to see how the uh everything works in the background. Hello, my name is Carlos Woodman. I'm the sanitation supervisor. I've been here with the city of Greenville ever since December of last year. As a sanitation supervisor, I I go out in the field and I oversee the collection of the Yawways Vegetation, and I also assist with the recycle and refuge and bug item pickup. What I believe as working in sanitation is very important to the community because we help keep our community clean. We help keep our community neat and where we collect the garbage and recycles, and also uh Lord, the disease and pest control. Since my being here, uh city of Greenville, uh, I was entered into the star program, and I learned a whole I learned a great deal of things uh concerning myself, uh how to manage my crew, uh how to deal with others. So that star program was very special and important part of me coming in. I enjoy doing this type of work. I enjoy working with my co-workers and all, and I just enjoy helping keeping everything clean. Calvin Horn Senior, recruitment coordinator for Greenville Fire and Rescue. I've been with the city of Greenville, Greenville for over 32 years. I'm originally from Farmville, North Carolina. So I I it was a chance decision to become a firefighter. At a particular time, I just wanted a job. And I came in contact with the current firefighters and asked me if I was interested in applying. I knew the chief, I knew the assistant chief at the time. So I applied and luckily I I applied because I have been going from job to job. So once I applied, I I felt I was gonna be here for a long time. Also uh I've made lifelong uh friends since I've been here. Uh been here over 30 years. Um I've known I got friends that I've known longer than my children, and I still know them to today. And we still have uh a contact with a lot of retirees, so um helping people, uh the friendship that I've established uh and the friendship I hope to continue to maintain. The challenging part about the recruitment coordinator position is uh the fire service is no different from everything else that's going on around the country now with staffing issues, uh recruiting issues are the same, also retention issues are the same. Uh our numbers are down on just like they are any other fire service in any other organization. Uh so we have to beat the pavement a little bit more. Um things we do is not gonna work. Uh we understand this job is not for everybody, but we try to get the most elite people we can to come and work for our organization. Um it's been a difficult task, but I'm up for the task. So as a recruitment retention coordinator here at Graver Fire and Rescue, of course, I'm uh responsible for recruiting new applicants coming in, we call them fire rescue trainees, uh uh to uh be firefighters and uh EMS providers. Also during that process, prior to that process, I'm in charge of the hiring process as well. Um making sure working with human resources getting out ads for uh the job postings, and once the job postings are complete, uh just like right now, we're currently in a hiring process. I run the uh physical abilities testing, uh the panel interviews and the chief's interview before it goes back over to human resources for the uh employees to complete, complete, continue to be vetted. The recruitment and retention uh position here at Greenville Fire Rescue is only four years old. I've been doing it for the last four years. Been the only one. Um I've what I did once I came, I called other recruitment coordinators from across the state and find out where their job duties were and things of that nature. So um some of the things I do is um I try to vet some of the employees that we um choose to uh uh recruit. Uh we recruit um all different types of people from all walks of life. And once I make contact with those people, I try to continue communicating with them to let them know that we're still interested in them. And I also let them know this job is not for everyone.
