Special Meeting – Election Canvass – June 16, 2026
The City of Mesquite held a special meeting on June 16, 2026, at 2:45 PM to canvass the June 9, 2026 Primary Municipal Election for Councilmember Seat 1. However, due to an unexpected delay in receiving official election results from the Secretary of State, the canvass could not be completed. The meeting was adjourned with a decision to hold an emergency meeting on Thursday, June 18, 2026, to finalize the canvass.
Public Comments
- Wes Boger, a Mesquite resident, asked how the public would be notified of the emergency meeting. The City Council responded that the notice would be posted immediately on the website and at the usual locations (post office, library, etc.). The meeting time was tentatively set for 4:00 PM, subject to adjustment due to a DAR awards event.
Discussion Items
- Item 2.1 – Canvass of the June 9, 2026 Primary Municipal Election: City Clerk Julie Goodsell reported that the Secretary of State had not yet provided the official election results. The original meeting was scheduled for June 16, 2026, but the results were not expected until June 17 or 18. Given the statutory 10-day deadline to complete the canvass, and the fact that Friday June 19 is a federal holiday, the City decided to hold an emergency meeting on Thursday, June 18, 2026, under emergency meeting procedures. The time was discussed: initially 4:00 PM, but adjusted to around 5:00 PM to accommodate a DAR awards event. No action was taken on the canvass at this meeting.
Key Outcomes
- No vote was taken on the canvass; the item was effectively postponed.
- The City will hold an emergency meeting on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at approximately 4:00 PM (or 5:00 PM) to complete the canvass and certify the election results.
- Public notice of the emergency meeting will be posted immediately.
Note: The agenda lists the election date as June 9, 2026, while the transcript refers to July 9, 2026. This summary uses the official agenda date, as the transcript appears to contain an error.
Meeting Transcript
We're gonna roll into our second meeting, which is the special meeting election canvas, and we are start with open public comment for that. Okay, seeing no one else come forward. We're gonna move to 2.1 consideration for approval of the canvas of the July 9th, 2026 primary municipal election for council member seat one and to the direct city clerk to certify the abstract and transmit to the Secretary of State. And Mrs. Goodsell, we'll turn it over to you. So there's been unexpected delay in the canvas recording. They are not ready, so we will be having an emergency meeting on Thursday at an unforeseen time at the moment. Thursday. In two days. In two days. It's an emergency meeting. I am in contact with the Secretary of State. Oh, and that's allowed under the It's an emergency meeting. Yeah. So Julie contacted me earlier today. The Secretary of State hasn't got the official numbers yet. And we had this meeting notice for today. Uh or Julie had noticed it for today. And so they're not anticipating getting it until maybe tomorrow or the next day. And so she's been in communication with the Secretary of State because we could have it on Friday, but Friday is a federal holiday, and we were already past the notice time period before we knew that it wouldn't wasn't gonna happen. And so they've given us direction to in our statute. And so they've encouraged us and directed us that well have it on Thursday under the emergency meeting procedures so that we can get it within. There's a 10-day time frame after the election has completed to get the canvassing in. And so given the unique circumstances, we're gonna she just barely spoke with them right before she came in, and this is the direction that they gave us. So that's what we got. Well, that's what we're gonna do. All right. And do we have a time? Not yet. Let's we have negotiations that day, so I would say at least after four, if possible after four. About four o'clock. Sounds good. Well, there the DAR awards are at four o'clock on that day. About five o'clock. But he oh, yeah, he needs to be, he won't be cloud. Do it at four, it won't last long. You can always head over. Yeah, okay. If that works, all right. Because it's a closer street call. Um, so I guess essentially we're gonna pull that item. Um we'll go ahead and have public comment on that. Sun City's also have booths and we're gonna afternoon, West Boger, Mesquite resident. I just had um this emergency meeting. I don't know if that's the intent of what they're considering an emergency, but even if it isn't, I have a question. I know it's public comment, but this is a question people should do it to us all the time when I was up there asking questions rather than comments. But how is the public going to be noticed on this? Is it gonna be the same? It's gonna be posted on the website, and then you're gonna go to the post office and all that the day before or a couple days before. Okay, and you guys have set the time then for it.
