The Mesquite Public Arts Commission (MPAC) met on Monday, August 17, 2026, at 10:00 AM in Mesquite City Hall. - Bulldog Statues (Item 3.2): Commissioner Dave reported finding a vendor who can produce the statues at a cost of approximately $10,000 for the mold plus the first statue, and $2,000 for a second statue (total ~$12,000). The high school (Steven) and the city (Jess) have expressed interest in hosting them. The commission voted unanimously to move forward with the purchase; the item will be brought to the city council for final approval. A future grant application to Main Street is planned.
- Poet Laureate Program (Item 3.3): The submission deadline (August 15, 2026) resulted in three finalists: one student (Callie) and two adults (Russ Westwood and Christy Tossinga). The schedule: a live poetry reading for the finalists on September 16, 2026, at the library; naming of winners at the September 21 commission meeting; and presentation to the city council on October 13, 2026. The commission approved the schedule and an expenditure of $200 for awards and name tags (using M.O.R.F. funds).
- Commissioner Comments and Reports (Item 4): Commissioners discussed the upcoming Second Saturday event and plans for the new amphitheater at the Heritage Center. Ideas included using the amphitheater for open mic, poetry readings, and performances; a sound system assessment is desired. Commissioner Karen provided updates on grants: $15,000 from Nevada Arts Council for fire station wraps (artist Rochelle Knight); the hand-drawn arts district map has been donated by M.O.R.F.; and a softball girl in a wheelchair sculpture is expected by end of month for the wreck area, with a suffrage wrap due September/October. Commissioner Bethany mentioned the fall play 'Trapped' at the high school.

We'll move to number two, the consent agenda, consideration of the approval of the Monday, July 20th meeting minutes, and the Monday, August 17th public arts commission meeting agenda. Do I have any public comment? No. Any discussion among the four of us here. No. So does someone want to make a motion to uh accept the um commission meeting minutes. Thank you, Mitzi. Um we'll get to administrative items 3.1 report from the second Saturday committee regarding the progress of second Saturday, which was first Friday. And Judy was here. Judy was here, yes. And Judy had to leave for the meeting because they're having a meeting at 11 o'clock, which Mitzi will run over there afterwards, and they're moving forward. And there seems like some good things happening with the Heritage Center. And yes, and I I want to one thing I want to make sure they're putting together their logos, and I just wanted to make sure that uh Judy was requesting MPAT logo. Um I sent the theater, Mesquite Committee Theater logo, and so I just want to make sure that that is covered. Her and I talked about that, yes. Okay, so make sure we got MPAC logo on.
