2:49

3:05
Second by Director Maple.
3:07

3:53
With that item dispensed with, now we will move with item number two, public comment on matters not on the agenda.
4:02
Seeing none on file.
4:06
Anyone in our audience in Cyberland.
4:13
Hearing and seeing none, we will move on to item number three presentation.
4:17
Friends of the Sacramento Public Library, item 3.1.
4:21
I see Devon on the line.
4:23
How are you doing today?
4:28
I'm in the cyber world.
4:29
Um sorry I couldn't be there with you in person, but um, it is an honor to present on behalf of the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library.
4:37
Since um your uh authority board convened last, the uh Friends of the Sacramento Public Library convened an all friends meeting on June 22nd at the North Natomas Library, where they um started off with uh lunch and a talk with author Eddie On.
4:54
He's the author of the graphic memoir advocate, and so it was great for the friends to be able to engage in that space and hear more from the author.
4:59
Uh we also were able to um engage in reports with our president and treasurer, and then um discuss our successes with the broader um membership about our big day of giving efforts going on at the booked in, and then um had a presentation on the state of the library where the Sacramento Public Library volunteer coordinator and Sacramento Public Library Public Service Manager as well as Director uh Coyle provided um a presentation to the members of the Friends, and then we also were able to discuss affiliate support committee work, um, where we're continuing to work on one of the biggest topics for our affiliates is succession planning, and so we are trying to continue to upgrade our processes so folks can feel confident as folks continue to serve in different capacities and affiliates across the uh region.
5:57
So we're working on providing support services for them.
6:01
And then um lastly, at that meeting, we asked all the friends uh groups who are in attendance to talk about what was unique about their branch, and so uh groups shared some of the efforts they've been doing, things that have been unique about their group.
6:14
So that was just a way for one for folks to be able to participate, but two just to know what's going on across our local affiliates.
6:21
So um we have um a lot of stuff going on.
6:25
Um one thing that uh we're excited about the bookden is still doing some great things, they're hosting an event for um kids in the um in foster program, and so we're doing a children's book um type day for them in August.
6:40
So looking forward to that coming up and our volunteers helping to support those efforts.
6:45
And then um the next thing around the corner for us is in September on September 9th at 7 p.m.
6:50
on Zoom is our next um FRIS Friends of the Sacramento Public Library Board meeting.
6:56
So we're gonna continue our efforts to support the library and happy to take any questions at the time.
7:02
Thank you again as always for the opportunity to share the work on behalf of the friends.
7:08
And how did how did the Friends do this year on uh big day of giving?
7:15
Oh yes, we the numbers are final, but we we made a total of a hundred and seven hundred and seventeen thousand, um, which is our record breaking for us.
7:26
And so I believe, and and don't quote me, Mr.
7:29
Chair, but I think we will do the check presentation at the next um authority board meeting.
7:34
But uh Director Coyle may know better than I, but we are so excited that we had a record-breaking year, thanks to our affiliates, all of our supporters, and of course the JPA who participated in their individual and um elected capacities as well.
7:50
No, that is exciting, especially when you're doing record-breaking numbers.
7:54
Um, it definitely shows that people are engaged and want to be a part of everything that the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library is doing.
8:03
Um so congratulations and and and thank you again.
8:06
It definitely is a team effort, but um definitely thank you to you and your board for for the hard work putting in and making sure that that the day became very successful.
8:19
Do we have any questions from our fellow directors on the lectern?
8:23
Uh Director Lefkowitz.
8:25
Yeah, um, I actually don't have a question, but I did want to thank you all for your service and support to the library, and I'm a CASA for foster youth, and so I am deeply grateful that you are hosting an event to help them get access to books.
8:44
So thank you for that.
8:49
All right, seeing and hearing none, we will move on to item number four, executive team report.
8:57
Uh great, thank you, Chair Brewer.
8:59
And uh to answer uh Dr.
9:00
Graves' question, yes, we hope to have the friends do a presentation with uh the check next month at our next board meeting.
9:07
I have uh a meeting with the Friends.
9:09
President Rachel on Monday will discuss those details.
9:12
So we're looking forward to having the friends uh present that check.
9:16
Um and that funding, as you know, goes towards our summer reading program and and uh book first.
9:21
Uh so that funding will come right as we are starting that program for the next fall and begin planning for next year's summer reading, so the timing is advantageous, and we are very appreciative of the hard work that they uh undertook this year with that program to raise a record setting amount of money.
9:37
Um very grateful for that.
9:40
Um I wanted to highlight a few items um from the written report and add a couple additions verbally to you.
9:46
Um, first, I wanted to note that we are um at the year anniversary of the Colonial Heights Library being closed from fire damage.
9:55
We are working closely with the city for that project to uh to complete and so we can reopen to the public.
10:02
Um we have information from the city that they are supposed to take some of the contracts and other legal information to the city council at the end of this month, so that progress uh will be reported out once we have more information from them.
10:16
Um our understanding is that it's expected to be completed next year, um, but we will keep you updated as we find more information.
10:24
We continue to do outreach in that community through um uh number of uh farmers markets and bookmobile stops and some other story times at some of the community centers, and we'll continue those efforts uh while the building remains closed.
10:37
Um we did a walkthrough the other day, and progress is happening, um, but I hope to have more information once we uh have some official word from the city who is managing and responsible for that construction project.
10:51
Uh the other item that I know that we are all very anxious about is our North Sacramento Heguan library.
10:57
Um, that retrofit is um scheduled to take place.
11:01
Uh library staff have been occupying that building as office space uh since it was acquired.
11:07
Uh they are in the process uh by the end of next week uh to vacate that building, and we plan to turn that building over to the city of Sacramento to begin the work on that uh um around August 1st.
11:19
So at that point, the city will be responsible for the project and begin the construction.
11:24
Um we have had meetings with the design and the architect, and I think they're ready to go, but we will find out more information once they have official word from that department on that project.
11:37
Um we're very excited about it.
11:39
Um the community is very excited.
11:41
In fact, the Rotary Club of North Sacramento has actually provided funding for a library um library of things, and uh we are also rolling out we just came up with a new a name for this, a uh digital preservation lab, and this will allow people as we discussed last meeting to preserve their uh their old photos and other things.
12:05
So that branch when it opens will have that as a as a new uh service to the community as well.
12:12
So we're very excited about that.
12:15
Um, in terms of staffing, uh, we have uh some two executive positions open currently.
12:22
Uh, the deputy director and chief uh public service officer.
12:26
That position is currently um in uh in the process of being filled.
12:33
It was advertised and the uh recruiting firm has finalized the candidates and we'll begin the process of interviewing over the next couple weeks, and um, we'll have uh someone in that role.
12:45
I can't tell you exactly, but we will definitely have it by the end of the year, um, depending on who we select and uh their availability to begin.
12:52
Uh, but we have a number of excellent candidates, and we're being in that process to begin the interviews uh in the next couple weeks.
13:00
Um and then our chief human resource officer position is vacant.
13:04
That is being advertised, and that position announcement closes August 4th.
13:09
Um, I know at this point they've already received a number of really good qualified candidates, so we're excited and know that we'll have um a wealth of of people to choose from.
13:19
So I think we're in good hands, and of course, those folks will then be at these meetings, and you'll have a chance to meet them once we uh have them on board.
13:27
So we're excited to uh have that process continue and have these positions filled to continue the operations of the library.
13:38
Other item is uh just wanted to highlight some of the uh the media mentions we've been receiving.
13:44
Uh, we have a very active social media presence in our community engages with us with comments and questions about our services.
13:51
Many of them uh revolve around Colonial Heights Library and other programs, and we are responding to those in kind with accurate information and we know that we are um as eager as they to have the library reopened um and we will also by the end of the year have a new website uh and new branding for the library uh Lisa Martinez our chief communications officer and her team have been working very hard to upgrade the website and um we are looking forward to having that uh unveiled by the end of the year um it's a great um new setup it's very clean very modern and really hoping to have uh more ease of access for our customers to find the information at the library services and programs in their community and how the library can help them in their efforts to uh live productive lives which is part of our mission.
14:45
Um and I will also note that um just our statistics if you look at the the information that we have provided um monthly statistics May and June you'll notice um that our library visits continue to increase particularly if you look at June this time over last year um we are um almost you know over nearly I'll say nearly half a million just because it sounds better uh more visits over this time over last year so our community is is responded to our services and our be our um programs that we offer to them and we continue to be responsive to their needs and look forward to serving them as they come to the library.
15:28
I'll end my report there and happy to answer any questions intertaining and comments that the board might have at this time.
15:34
Thank you Director Coyle um do you have any numbers regarding the the the summer lunch program and and our enrollment for that and how many students are are have have um applied for it and and taking advantage of the program yeah Director Brewer that's a great question um for the summer lunch uh that is a drop in programs we don't enroll people for that but we will be able to provide you information next board meeting of the end of the year numbers um I don't have those at at the tip of my fingers but I will tell you that we I do know that we are um uh we have surpassed last year's numbers already um and so the need is great um our summer reading numbers is more of a sign up system and we can provide those numbers for you um at the next meeting and I'm I'm happy to send I'll send the board a um an interim report after this meeting I I just don't have those and I I will admit I should have had those with me and I apologize I don't no that's okay that that's okay because one one of the things uh so last weekend I was at uh Superparent Day over by Consumers River College at Shasta Community Park over um where Valley High North Laguna um libraries located and it was funny because I was wearing uh our summer reading t-shirt uh and that garnered a lot of attention from parents and and the kids so that was really cool and just having knowing that we have things like that that is not only free advertising for the library but also a free education source because a lot of parents they tend to forget and some are unaware.
17:09
So it's it serves a dual purpose by wearing something like that outside of our official golf shirts that have our names on them and stuff.
17:17
Yeah and appreciate you being a good ambassador for the library so we encourage you to do that more often I guess but we'll get you those information um for those numbers not a problem.
17:26
And definitely thank you for providing an update on both the Hagenwood library and colonial heights it seems like yesterday or a couple of weeks ago that the Colonial Heights library experienced the fire and so it's definitely something for us to to really be aware of and thank you for sharing that with us.
17:43
Yes sir um any questions from any of our directors hearing and seeing none uh we'll move down to item number five which is information and I trust that a lot of us have have any information that um that Johnny has shared with us do we have any questions from any of the members for Johnny regarding um the treasurer's reports for May and April?
18:10
Hearing and seeing none, we'll move on to item number eight.
18:14
Reports, ideas, and questions from board members.
18:18
Um, any items from any of any of us here.
18:23
Hearing and seeing none.
18:25
Um, closed session.
18:29
And so now at we're at the magic hour of 3 38.
18:33
So again, I want to thank you all for your patience.
18:29
Thank you for participating and being here this afternoon, and we will see you at our next meeting in August.
18:42
So at that time, I'm looking for a motion to adjourn.
18:48
I see a first, second, and a third.
18:50
So as of 3 38, we're officially adjourned.
18:53
Have a safe weekend and have a great evening.
