The Baton Rouge Metro Council held a regular meeting on May 13, 2026, preceded by a recognition ceremony. The main agenda item was a proposal to amend the 2026 pay plan for city-parish employees, including constables, public works, and other staff, with an average 3.5% increase and implementation of a market-based pay study. After extensive public testimony and council debate, the measure was approved 10-1, with Councilman Hudson voting against. The council also voted to delete a mowing contract with the state due to a funding deficit, and approved various other items.
You're live in five seconds. Three. All right, good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to our regularly scheduled Metro Council Metro Council recognition ceremony prior to today's Metro Council meeting. And we're going to kick off today with our mayor president Sid Edwards. He will recognize Serenity Smith from Scotlandville Madden High School for Mayor for today. Mayor Edwards. Man, uh Serenity. Mayor, Mayor Smith. Come on up, Mayor. I gotta tell your counsel. I think I'm just gonna turn it on over to her and go on home and go coach some ball. Are y'all clapping because y'all think I really go do that? Or you know. This young lady here is so impressive. And uh she wrote an essay uh kind of in a contest to see who would become, you know, when when, so to speak, the mayor of the day. And we've we were together, her and I were together on the Jim Inkstra show, and then we went down to the state capitol and spent some time with vendors there, then our staff. She worked in different parts, including comms uh this morning. She did uh a video that will be released in in the coming days. We just had a meeting in my office about the state of the city and everything that's going on here. And she's extremely impressive, and I'm proud to say she's our mayor of the day, and she knows she's got a spot in City Hall whenever she likes. So Mayor Smith, this is a certificate of commendation to you, presented to you, Serenity Smith, for becoming that mayor of the day. Uh by the way, she is a sophomore. Okay, so she's got a couple of more years, and look, you got a couple of council folks here that are. Do you know who your councilman person is in Scott? You know that, huh? All right. So I want to congratulate you, and I know I'd like you to say a few words. Maybe I know about today or about maybe something where you wish for Baton Rouge. How's that? Come on up, give her a hand. Hello, my name is Serenity. I'm from Scotlandville Madden High School. Um I'm a sophomore, and something that I just hope for today. Um, one that the pay does, you know, that this goes. And also um mental health. Mental health is very important to teens. Um, and most people just they don't feel confident to speak up and go to other people about it. So that's something that I wish to change for Baton Rouge. And Mayor Edwards, and Mayor Smith, I won't have a personal point of privilege. Uh, Mayor Smith is also a star basketball player at Skylerville Magnet High. So let's give a round of applause. And so I'm proud to say you she's from District 2 in Scotlandville, but Mayor Smith, uh, we are very proud of you. I know Mayor Edwards might have a presentation. Um, but just knowing you know what goes into decision making is very critical and important. I know spending the day with our mayor, uh, I know he's very laid back, but I know at times when it's time for him to become the mayor and put that man on is a very, very serious job. So I hope you learned a lot today. And I'd like to introduce, would you come introduce yourself? This is uh one of the educators. Um good evening, everyone.
