1:34

There's many other communities that do that, and we just thought it would be a good idea to get some of the young folks in the community involved.

1:40

And so we went through a process where we took applications, we did some interviews, and we settled on three great candidates that we're happy are here tonight.

1:48

And uh we're gonna have them come up uh one at a time to do uh little introduction of themselves.

1:53

And just like all the other speakers here tonight, you're gonna have up to three minutes uh to introduce yourselves.

1:59

You don't have to take the whole time, of course, but uh you'll have that opportunity.

And I do want to uh just uh good evening, everyone.

2:26

2:47

Summary of Proceedings

Bethel Park Council Meeting: September 14, 2026

The Bethel Park Borough Council held its regular meeting on September 14, 2026, with seven members present. The meeting began with the introduction of three junior council members, followed by reports from officials, recognitions, resident comments, and the approval of multiple agenda items.

Consent Calendar

  • Approved items A through I on the consent agenda unanimously (7-0). These routine items included outstanding bills, change orders, and minutes from previous meetings.

Public Comments

  • Frank Faraday (King School Road resident) raised safety concerns about the walkway along King School Road near the new elementary school. He noted the walkway is only 29 inches from the roadway and lacks a barrier, posing danger to young children. He also mentioned the intersection of King School Road and Stoltz Road remains hazardous due to obstructed views from trees, and that promised improvements have not been implemented.
  • Lauren Murphy (5818 King School Road) echoed speeding concerns, stating that vehicles regularly exceed the 25 mph speed limit, especially between 8-9 AM and 2:30-4 PM. She noted a speed sign is not capturing data and that her son's bus stop has been changed multiple times due to safety issues. She proposed installing speed tables, citing data from the Federal Highway Administration that they reduce speeds by 18-35% without slowing emergency response.

Reports and Recognitions

  • Library Director Christine Macintosh reported August statistics: 9,940 visitors, 21,400 physical items checked out, 9,940 electronic items, and 1,314 program attendees. She announced the "Love Your Library" campaign in September, with a $200,000 match pool from the Jack Buncher Foundation.
  • Police Chief Arnold remembered the victims of 9/11, urged drivers to be cautious in school zones, thanked the community for school supply donations, and announced a crime watch meeting on October 5th.
  • Fire Chief's Representative (First Lt. Steve McGuff) reported 82 fire calls in August (including 12 structure fires, 5 motor vehicle crashes), 985 volunteer hours valued at approximately $35,000, and emphasized the volunteer nature of the fire company. He provided electrical safety tips regarding downed power lines.
  • Manager Miss Denny thanked participants in Community Day, announced a flu shot clinic on September 22nd, noted the final weeks of the farmers market, and said polling location changes due to the K-5 center transition are being finalized.
  • Mayor Allen recognized Judy Murtaugh Dance Studio for 50 years of operation at the same location. He also honored Luke Fordice and Bella Dojack for rescuing three children from a car struck by a tree during a storm on September 3rd. He announced the Halloween decorating contest, citizen of the year nominations, and the 90+ Club luncheon on October 2nd.

General Policy and Finance Items

  • Approved a three-year contract renewal with Third Generation for cloud-based phone services at $1,700.11 per month (7-0).
  • Rejected bids for 2026 road salt (sodium chloride) from American Rock Salt Company ($152/ton) and Government MLO Supplies ($206/ton) due to sufficient salt purchased under last year's contract (7-0).
  • Approved an operation and maintenance agreement for a small flow treatment facility at 719 McMurray Road with Jason and Jessica Bossers (7-0).

Planning and Zoning Items

  • Approved Resolution R9-14-26A, a revision to the official sewage facilities plan for the proposed Dogwood Charter School development at 1008 Progress Court (7-0).
  • Approved Resolution R9-14-26B, approving the transfer of restaurant liquor license R12740 from the municipality of Mount Lebanon to Bethel Park (from the theater at the Galleria to the theater at South Hills Village) (7-0). This is a first step; final approval rests with the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.

Public Works and Maintenance Items

  • Approved a COSTARS quote from Elcon Technologies for $132,000 from the capital budget to upgrade SCADA, PLC, and HMI components at the municipal sewage treatment plant to ensure current software and firmware (7-0).

Key Outcomes

  • All seven motions before council passed unanimously (7-0). No items were defeated or tabled.
  • Resident safety concerns regarding King School Road were noted but no immediate action was taken; the council heard the comments.
