The other is something we've been talking about for the last few weeks with the council.

Um, but now we get the chance to talk about it in a more um uniform uh and aligned way.

And that is a home homeless summit related to our unhoused residents.

The City of Birmingham in partnership with one roof will host the state of homelessness.

Redefining community on Monday, December 1st.

Again, that is next Monday, December 1st.

This is the first of its con symposium with the intent to bring together faith leaders, nonprofits, local businesses, civic partners, and public sector leaders for a united front and a united conversation about Birmingham's homelessness response and the shared path forward.

This is a free event and it is that's a public event and it's open to the general public, and it will take place at 1 p.m.

at Regentsfield.

That address is 1401 First Avenue South, again, 1401, First Avenue South.

We want to encourage people to register at eventbrite.com.

And I think the biggest thing I can say, Madam President, is council.

Uh I think between the executive sessions and one on ones and council meetings and committee committee meetings, we have talked about this a lot.

Um really hope to see your faces there.

I think in addition to that, um, some information should have already been shared with you about some some draft proposals and plans as well.

So let's take a deeper dive Monday, and I hope your schedule permits you to attend.

And I'm thinking about Miss Bushelon, who um is one of Miss Langford's dearest friends and all the other family and friends who I did not um name, but on behalf of the city of Birmingham to Cassie and Linnae and the entire Langford family, we would like to offer our serious condolences to the passing of Miss Melbourne Langford.

Um I think we all know her as a devoted public servant, not just as First Lady of the City of Birmingham serving those two years, but also really leaning in and helping the residents of District 8 when she served under Councillor Hoyt.

She was a devoted, devoted, devoted wife, um, an inspiring trailblazer and a compassionate leader whose life work left and mark on the city of Birmingham.

And so we pray for Miss Cassie and Linnae and all of her friends and family, especially at a time when all of us will be with our families.

I'll um entertain any questions for the mayor, but I'd like to start first by um also offering condolences uh to the Langford family.

I know that Mrs.

Lankford was important to so many people in this city, and so we share in your offering of sympathy as well.

And in regards to the homeless summit, um, I am excited about the summit coming up on December 1st.

I know that those of us who did uh attend the National League of Cities City Summit this past week.

We those of us uh who were in attendance, we were part of a large cities council committee meeting, and one of the issues that we addressed was homelessness and how it affects large cities such as ours.

And I know there was a lot of interest in what we're actually doing in Birmingham.

And so um, I know that each of us may talk about that later when we're giving our updates, but I did want to let you know that we're very interested in what we're doing here in Birmingham, and we had a chance to talk to uh other large cities that are having um trying to talk about this issue and do things for our unhoused residents.

As as y'all may know, many of uh many of us on council attended a conference, the National League of Cities.

We heard from colleagues across our country.

Uh the reality is the issues that we face in Birmingham are relevant across the country.

Homelessness, housing, um uh addressing the needs of our unhoused.

Uh this was relevant in Dallas and Cleveland, Honolulu, literally across the country.

So we're excited to hear more on the State of the Homelessness Summit.

That's Monday, December 1st from 1 to 5 p.m.

Um looking forward to creating some avenues for uh some effective uh policies there.

Uh additionally, in terms of neighborhood association meetings, Redmont Park is tonight, 5 p.m.

at the gardens.

Uh Monday, 12.1, Glen Iris meets at St.

Elias at 6 30, and Tuesday, 12.2, Forest Park South Avondale meets at 6 30 at the South Avondale Library.

Um, we had a good uh annual Thanksgiving giveaway yesterday at Sixth Avenue Baptist Church.

Thank you to the Omegos, Harmony Heritage, um, members of the community neighborhood officers for helping out.

Um, and happy Thanksgiving to everyone, and I enjoy going to National League of Cities, especially serving on the Fair Committee, which is the Finance Committee, and uh serving on the women in Munespa government, also, Madam President.

It was her last meeting as large cities council uh president, and she did a very good job.

We learned a lot of good information.

Uh different things we learned was about affordable child care at National League of Cities, the use of AI and city government.

Um you can use it for three-on-one calls to track policies, so I think that's something maybe we will look into even a meeting like this.

Uh the AI could get the meeting notes for us, and then we can give out a lot easier.

Um we also got update on the government shutdown and how that affected the country and what does it look like moving forward.

Uh, they also talked about um there may be a possibility of a partial shutdown at the end of January, but they did talk about um how TSA was talking to the federal government about covering that pay for them just in case we had another government shutdown so that travel won't be affected.

So I really enjoyed it.

There were some other things that I learned as well.

Um I enjoy um spending time with my colleagues and other colleagues from around the country.

So I hope everybody has a happy Thanksgiving.

Uh don't eat too much, and also rolls high.

Um so for District 5, the Wahoma Neighborhood Association will meet on Thursday, December 4th at 6 p.m.

at the East Lake Library.

And uh Oak Ridge Park Neighborhood Association will meet Monday, December 8th at 6 p.m.

at the Harris Holmes Recreation Center.

Um on the National League of Cities City Summit trip.

I'll I'll share that one of the more interesting discussions that the board of directors had was on uh modern day federalism and how um there's a currently a reshuffling going on of responsibilities uh at the federal level, state and cities, and you know, primarily um the federal government is shifting more responsibility on to states and especially municipalities.

Um so there was a discussion amongst the board about what that looks like for municipalities across the country, and one of the you know more relevant topics was uh SNAP benefits, and I was able to tell that 40 member board, you know, what we did here in the city of Birmingham relative to the gap in SNAP benefits and you know how we're bracing ourselves uh for the same issue to raise its head uh here in the near future because we know that debate is um not over yet.

So um I was quite proud of Birmingham for what we did in that moment.

Um it was you know not something that a lot of cities um were capable of doing you know, even if they wanted to.

Uh so you know it was one of the the things that um I was thinking, you know.

We we have a lot of work to do in Birmingham.

I think everybody knows that there's a lot of need here.

Um we know have a lot to be proud of too in that we strive very hard to meet the needs of our citizens, and you know, I just say that because I want Birmingham, the folks of Birmingham to be proud of themselves and to be um proud of you know how we serve you because we are uh thinking about our citizens every day and and try and meet their needs.

Um there are you know a lot of things to enjoy in the city of Birmingham.

So take the time to enjoy those things on Black Friday.

And then as we move into Saturday, make sure to go out and shop local and support our small businesses.

And then the last thing that I have is uh just want to recognize and shout out Kingston.

Uh they had their annual Thanksgiving and award ceremony yesterday, and it was a wonderful time.

So guest guests can receive free groceries, free medical screenings, free clothing, and more.

And the service will begin at 5 p.m.

Instead of neighborhood meetings, the following communities and neighborhoods will have holiday socials.

So on December 1st, this first, the Smithfield community will be meeting at Parker High School at 6 p.m.

December 2nd, the Fairview Neighborhood Association will be having an event at the Opportunity Center located at 1600 Fourth Avenue West at 11 a.m.

And December 2nd that evening, the Thomas neighborhood is having an event at Greater St.

Thomas Baptist Church, and that's at 6 30 p.m.

So related to the National League of Cities, I just want to say how great it was to see my colleagues shine, um, to see our um Madam President to represent us with the National with the large cities, and then making it to the regional, being a leader at the regional level to seeing um Dr.

O'Quinn represent us for on the executive board and um Councilor Smith and representing us with the women and municipal uh government.

So that was wonderful to see you all in your elements there.

And then also just being able to attend the sessions that were there, in particular sessions on policy zoning, and then the women session where we talked about child care.

As you all have said, I echo everything you said.

I also want to also, Council Smith has recognized Julia, the Thomas president for being here on today.

It is a lot of social things going on.

We did have you know some great conversation.

It was good, you know, getting a chance to spend some time with you all and just seeing the different things that are going around around the country that's not just only happening in Birmingham, but everywhere.

In particular, you spoke about you know the homeless um unhoused issue.

I think myself and Councillor Vasa had an opportunity to sit, you know, at the same have some conversation with people from Nashville.

Um I had an opportunity to go into some public safety um events, um, and a lot of people are watching Birmingham.

Birmingham seemed to have been the eye-opener for a lot.

A lot of people have their eyes on Birmingham and just seeing the great things, you know, that we're doing in this city.

But again, congratulations to you, Madam President, Dr.

O'Quinn, Councilwoman Smithman.

Um, I was at your in the women's lecture, but I was sitting in the back, you did a great job there.

Um it's just a lot.

A lot of work.

One thing stuck out with me that really, really, and I think all of us heard about just serve, like how you really become a volunteer, you know, in your community and coming together as a collective because the government cannot do this alone.

People have to get off the sidelines and join in to change the trajectory, you know, of their neighborhood.

So it was a lot of things.

We went into one session where it was talking about capital investments, how philanthropy, philanthropic, how you leverage, you know, everybody, public and private partnerships to, you know, do affordable housing.

It's it's a lot, it's a lot to learn.

And you know, we definitely want to make sure that our constituents um, you know, come aboard and be a part of the process, and that makes people feel empowered when you are part, you know, of the process, and we want to extend you know that process to those who want to join in.

So again, I wish everybody a happy, safe Thanksgiving as Councillor Gunn said, shop locally, local, local, local.

Sometimes you have to hit some pockets for people to really, you know, get on board to um really um address the needs of communities.

So I want to say finally, um, I know yes, Dr.

Quinn said about we talked about the snap, and I think we read a tape, we was actually uh council gunn, uh boss and myself was able to tell.

I think I talked about the million, how we was able to get it out, but just thinking about how do we how do we move past you know Thanksgiving, like how do we come together as a collective and and join forces and uh making sure that families are fed throughout the year.

So be thinking about that.

I know that you'll be lending your voice to the public safety uh committee or constituency group, and so we look forward to the information that you'll be bringing and sharing on that front.

As it's already been said, we did have an opportunity.

Um six counselors were able to attend the National League of Cities, the City Summit, and we were joined by over 3400 other local elected officials throughout the United States, and as um already been shared.

It benefited us very much to be able to hear those voices as well as to talk about the things that we're doing here in Birmingham, and has already been said I did in my tenure as the chairperson of the large cities council, and this particular group is comprised of cities uh like sizes, ours, even larger than ours.

And so just hearing some of the information and programs that they had.

They were very interested in our choice neighborhood and the grant that we got.

People just were wondering, it really was an opportunity to show federal and local engagement and being able to bring opportunities for our residents.

And so they were very interested in that.

I don't know what y'all talked about at that table, uh, counselors Vasa and Tate, but everyone was very, very interested in what we're doing here in Birmingham as far as um the challenges that we have with our unhoused units and residents and what we're doing.

So a lot of interest was in that when we talk with other large cities.

So I'm grateful to the residents to the city that we had that opportunity to have those discussions.

We do not have any neighborhood association meetings scheduled for this week in D7.

I want to join uh colleagues in wishing everyone a happy Thanksgiving on uh more of a personal note when we talk about family and Thanksgiving.

I did have the opportunity this weekend to um have my granddaughter join me in membership in Alpha Cap Alpha Sorority Incorporated.

So it was a great family moment for all of us.

She joined the 94 other young ladies as they were initiated to the Alpha Side chapter at Tennessee State University.

So very excited for her and for all of those young ladies as they began a lifetime of sisterhood and uh community service.

So I'll just say happy Thanksgiving, Birmingham, spin, spin, spin, football, football, football, uh eat, eat, eat, roll, tide, roll.

So all right.

Uh at this time, and I'm oh, I won't be able to go home.

And also um we look forward to uh Turkey Day Classic in Montgomery.

So um we want those um Alabama State Hornets to win, win, win.

So I wrote a draft out, and this draft hopefully uh give y'all something along with what the people saying that may want to move, the ones that don't want to move, we'll have to figure that out.

But the north side is not getting any better.

One other thing I will say, we did have a very um very good discussion about public speaking and getting comments, and so um I'll be sure to give that information out to the council.

It we learned a lot of things about um this particular part of our agenda.

I also forgot I was in a session um dealing kind of public comment, but it was around uh different ways to get uh different forms of public hearings.

So I think it's called um maybe public assemblies.

They don't do it in the United States, but they do all over the country.

And it's like a randomization of people you send out postcards, but then they also taught us different forms of how to um express our opinions, but in a very constructive way, even though it was kind of silly with games, but it made a lot of sense.

So I I would love to bring that to you all to see how we can use that so we can get difference of opinions from people when we do public.

I believe both of those would be very helpful to us because again, the session I was in um what was it called?

The good, the bad, the legal.

We were able to partner with them this year to uh provide this Thanksgiving goods and boxes and turkeys to the community.

I think it's very impactful, just the opportunity to let people know that uh community leaders that we hear that we want to get back and just during this season of Thanksgiving, uh just a great opportunity to partner and get back, make an impact in our community uh during this holiday season.

Be sure to think about all of the things that you can be thankful for and think about how you can impact the lives of other people for the better.
