Do we have I understand you can't talk for those individuals that decided not to take the exam, but do we have any indication?

Uh was there a general trend as to why not, or we just don't have that information yet?

3:29

Um we do not have that information as of right now, unless the captain wants to speak or so uh to address that uh recently we had a meeting that uh invited the captains current captains as well as uh lieutenants that were eligible to uh test for captain to discuss with executive staff uh their concerns their uh their thoughts on uh the captain rank and what they uh what they want out of it, and uh the department is working towards the solution.

Summary of Proceedings

Clark County Metropolitan Police Department Board Meeting - September 24, 2026

The Board of the Clark County Metropolitan Police Department held a regular meeting on September 24, 2026, at 10:00 AM. The meeting included roll call, approval of previous minutes, and discussion of the consent agenda, specifically concerning the low number of candidates for the captain's examination.

Minutes Approval

  • The board approved the minutes of the regular meeting from August 27, 2026, with a correction to include Ms. Fox in the list of attendees. The motion carried unanimously.

Discussion Items

  • Captain's Examination Shortage: Trustee Elgin Simpson, with 33 years on the board, expressed concern that only one person took the captain's exam, stating he had never seen such a low number. Other board members inquired about the reasons. Captain Joshua Younger reported that the department had recently met with current captains and eligible lieutenants to discuss concerns about the captain rank and expectations. Executive staff are working on solutions, including collective bargaining with the supervisors' bargaining unit (which includes captains), focusing on pay concerns. Negotiations had started about a month ago with two sessions completed and a third scheduled. The process is expected to take some time. The board requested an update at the next meeting on the outcomes of those discussions.

Consent Calendar

  • The board accepted the agenda as presented following the discussion on the captain's examination shortage, with a motion and second.

Key Outcomes

  • The board approved the minutes of the August 27, 2026 meeting with a correction.
  • The board accepted the agenda as presented.
  • The board requested that the department provide information on changes to the captain rank and the outcomes of the collective bargaining discussions at the next board meeting.
