5:10

I would like to ask our current board and our interns to stand.

5:18

I am proud to acknowledge our diverse board, which is representative of much of the work in Davis and YOLO County that supports the 17 UN sustainable development goals and our local contributions to universal principles of leave no one behind, human rights, and gender equality that run through these global goals.

5:42

Our current work in Davis is highlighting how local actions support global goals.

Looking at the number of organizations you are acknowledging tonight, it is easy to see how these local actions contribute to the SDGs and other international commitments.

6:00

We are excited to see this and to be part of it tonight and going forward.

6:04

6:38

So our next proclamation will recognize October 24th as World Polio Day, and I'd like to invite Nirali Bernard, Chair of the Polio Plus Committee to come forward.

6:52

October 24th is recognized as World Polio Day, honoring the global effort to eradicate a disease that once paralyzed hundreds of thousands of children each year.

7:03

Polio is a highly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of five.

7:08

Most know it as polio virus.

7:11

The virus is spread person to person, typically through contaminated water.

7:15

It can attack the nervous system and in some instances lead to paralysis.

7:20

There's no cure, however.

7:22

There is a safe and effective vaccine, which Rotary and Partners use to immunize over 2.5 billion children worldwide.

7:30

Thanks to the leadership of Rotary International and its partners, polio cases have been reduced by more than 99%.

7:38

The rotary clubs of Davis and local volunteers continue to play a vital role in raising awareness, supporting immunization campaigns, and working toward a healthier polio-free world.

7:49

The City of Davis stands in solidarity with the global community in promoting health, compassion, and equity for all children.

7:57

Now, therefore, be it proclaimed that this Davis City Council on behalf of the citizens of Davis does hereby proclaim October 24, 2026 as World Polio Day in Davis and calls upon our community to support efforts to end polio fever.

The council also held a public hearing for a TEFRA bond issuance, received an update on the Economic Development Strategic Plan, and debated changes to council administration, including the selection process for Mayor and Vice Mayor.
