The Duluth City Council convened on August 6, 2026, for a regular meeting that included an interview for a board appointment, action on several resolutions, and a committee-of-the-whole session focused on proposed changes to the city's short-term rental (vacation rental) licensing and enforcement system. The meeting highlighted ongoing challenges with housing supply, enforcement gaps, and the need to balance tourism with neighborhood stability.
I got two minutes to spare. Hello. We have one interview tonight. Counselor Forsman who runs personnel is caught in a meeting with work, so I will be running this. I know that you are interviewing for the WLSSD board. I'm going to run through a handful of questions, then I'll open it up for other counselors. Okay. All right. The first one, give us a brief outline of your education and experience as it relates to this appointment and how would it benefit uh the specific body. Okay. Well, first of all, I just want to say thank you for all of you to show up and ask these questions. Um so one of the things that I've done is I've worked in social work for four years, uh, or roughly around that that time, and there's a lot of documentation and making sure that I can help the clients receive certain services. Um and then also my history with working for neighbors for more neighbors or volunteering for neighbors for more neighbors. I've done um I've worked on the legislation legislative side um and looking at different wording and phrasing of the legislation that has gone to the House, the State House, um, but unfortunately didn't pass. And then I became a parliamentarian for fun. Uh, and so I am a certified parliamentarian, and I know all the rules for Roberts, or try to. And then I am also a secretary. Um, so I can be a secretary at any meeting, pretty much. It's really nice thing. And then um also just volunteering with local orgs throughout. Um tell us a little bit more about why you're interested in serving on the WSLSSD board. Uh so it encoup encompasses so much of different little things. Uh for instance, it encompasses the uh unified development code, and then also state law, and then also um a different county, parts of the different county, not the whole entire county. And so that seems like a lot of fun. And then there's also the stewardship part that I really enjoy because there's wanting to make sure that we use renewable energy and also uh save our water. Okay. Um, what would you consider to be personal strengths or unique perspectives you would bring to this role? Well, I kind of asked my coworkers' perspective before this, because I kind of felt like there was going to be a question like that, and she said that I am really good at taking a step back and assessing the situation before making a choice or even deciding maybe I need to do more research before I make a choice. So I think I answered that. Okay. Um, is there anything else you'd like to add in relation to your qualifications or interest for this appointment? Um, so there are three sections within uh the board. There's the legislature committee, and then there's the operations and planning committee, and then there's the personnel committee. Um I I like legislation and reading through it. I have the time to do it, so that's exciting. Um, I do want to say, 'cause on my application I said there are no issues with scheduling. I just got an email, and the twenty fourth of August. I am unable to attend because of kind of prior engagements. It's a very confusing thing. Uh, we will you will probably not be on the board by then. Okay, cool. I'll just put that out there. Um, all right. I will open it up to counselor questions. Does anyone have any questions for Ms. Tarnowski? Um, I do know that I would I will chime in. Um, St. Louis County recently purchased a new dump and we will be doing some transfers for garbage up there. Um, wondering if you're following that, and then also curiosity on uh what your knowledge is with PFOS.
