Our meeting starts at 515.

1:22

And I'll take a we'll do a um move to approve the minutes from our last meeting, uh, agenda item 2A.

1:33

Um second.

1:37

Well, second.

1:38

Um great.

1:40

And uh item three, public appearances for non-agenda items.

1:45

We do not have any um public appearances or public comments.

1:49

So move past that into our agenda items under uh number letter number four.

1:55

So first one is uh number four, eight.

2:00

Let me let me get the door real quick.

2:02

Sorry.

2:08

No problem.

2:11

Apologize for the interruption, but uh we just start.

2:16

So we're gonna um jump into um updates from each subgroup and just to give the public uh some background.

2:25

We did identify um

Unassigned speaker

2:27

uh

Speaker 3

2:27

three working groups um to meet off site, and we did not reach quorum, they were groups of no more than three um to look at different items, and those three items were a DEI calendar, uh conversation about uh that, um uh a request from the mayor's office and city staff around potential uh Hoskakochi programming ideas, and then the final was looking

at

Speaker 3

2:53

their resources um and our next steps and a conversation around that.

2:57

So if we would, I'd like to move into uh having a report out from those different groups.

3:04

So we'll start with the DEI calendar.

Speaker 4

3:08

So um, so this is Jessica.

3:11

Hi.

3:11

Um there was a little bit of confusion as to who was doing what.

3:16

Um, and so um we did pull together um a very comprehensive um just any observance you can think of uh spreadsheet um with days or months, like depending on what um what this group or what our smaller committee ends up um landing on.

3:38

Um, but we do have that resource um that I will share out after this or share with Sarah to put in.

Speaker 3

3:46

Oh, I think uh probably go to Sarah.

3:48

Um, but I think uh one why don't you give us a little bit more information on uh some of the process and and maybe some of the discussion and then we can maybe bring some conversation around.

Speaker 4

4:00

Yeah, so um I will uh also pass it to Janice because we didn't actually get a chance to meet.

4:06

So this was really more just what is possible, what do other similar organizations do?

4:12

That's um kind of where I was uh coming from, approaching this from.

4:18

Um, and then I also um shared some different um these observances observances and then also went through and flagged yes, thank you.

4:32

Um flagged some that I thought um would be um appropriate that are typically um typically in broader organizations um observed.

4:46

So um that's what this list is.

4:48

Um and again I have a very exhaustive one elsewhere.

Unassigned speaker

4:52

Um and then the other thing, um, so I work at the university and was able to um they send out different like toolkits for each um observance.

Speaker 4

5:05

And I I share that with Janice to just say maybe that's something we can look into doing for the different um ways that we observe these things.

5:14

So it doesn't necessarily just need to be a declaration every time.

5:17

It could be like you know, sharing out from the social media or whatever the mayor would like to do as well.

5:24

So and I guess next steps, um, and I'll let Janice uh speak as well.

5:32

Um, but in my mind, next steps are does uh deciding if this list essentially looks good, and then um how do we want to go about presenting this to council

Speaker 5

5:46

to this group?

Speaker 4

5:47

Um, and I guess whatever,

Unassigned speaker

5:50

yeah.

Fitchburg DEI Advisory Committee Meeting – February 25, 2026

The Fitchburg DEI Advisory Committee met on February 25, 2026 starting at 5:15 PM. The meeting included reports from three working groups (DEI calendar, Hoskakochi community center programming, and racial equity tools), a review of the timing of multiple city plans, and a vote on creating a business recognition program with the first recognition for Fitchburg Family Pharmacy.

Discussion Items

  • DEI Calendar Work Group (Jessica and Janice): Presented a comprehensive spreadsheet of observances. Discussion focused on the committee’s role – the group should provide ideas and uplift existing efforts rather than manage the calendar. Next steps include deciding on the list and presenting it to the larger committee.
  • Hoskakochi Community Center Programming (Janet, Chris, Colleen): Proposed three pillars: community events (culturally relevant events, community meals, listening sessions), education/resources (library fairs, energy assistance, housing programs), and health/wellness (flu shot clinics, visiting nurses). Emphasis on hearing from residents and addressing barriers through an equity lens. Suggestions will be sent to the mayor.
  • Racial Equity Tools (Colleen, Christopher, Sarah): Reviewed tools from GARE, Seattle, Madison, and Nina Collective. Proposed a simplified rubric for evaluating plans brought to the committee, and supported a scope and sequence for staff training (training to be done by HR, not the committee). Draft rubric will be shared for feedback.
  • Timing of City Plans (Sarah): Presented an overview: Comprehensive Plan (out for bid), Housing Plan (expected adoption in coming months, available for comment), City in Motion (active), Healthy Neighborhoods Strategic Plan (completion in a few months), 5-Year Strategic Plan (update coming soon), Communications Plan (draft in progress), Urban Forestry Management Plan (public comments under review). Committee agreed to invite Jessica Wolf (Healthy Neighborhoods) and to send links to active plans.
  • Recognition of Fitchburg Business (Chris): Proposed recognizing Fitchburg Family Pharmacy for continuing gender-affirming care for youth and other community contributions (e.g., pandemic response). Discussion led to a broader recognition program for businesses and community members advancing racial and social justice.

Key Outcomes

  • Vote 1: Motion passed (unanimous) to create a recognition program for businesses and community members that demonstrate leadership in racial and social justice.
  • Vote 2: Motion passed (unanimous) to recommend Fitchburg Family Pharmacy as the first recognition, citing its provision of gender-affirming care for youth and its previous pandemic response.
  • Next Steps: Refine the DEI calendar list; continue work on the racial equity tools rubric and share with the full committee; invite internal DEI resource group to a future meeting; follow up on city plans and engage with department heads to clarify the committee’s role.

Other Business

  • Standing items: Upcoming observances (International Women’s Day, Neurodiversity Celebration Week, Elimination of Racial Discrimination Day, Arab American Heritage Month) and recent events (PFLAG meetings, Black History Month recognition).
  • Next meeting scheduled for Wednesday, March 25, 2026. Agenda will be distributed in advance.
