Grand Rapids Committee on Appointments Meeting - March 31, 2026
The Committee on Appointments met on March 31, 2026 at 8:00 AM and adjourned at 8:09 AM. The committee unanimously approved a resolution to reappoint current members to economic development boards aligning terms with the fiscal year, and discussed the current board and commission vacancy list, including scheduling interviews for the First Ward vacancy. The meeting also included announcements for the day's schedule: Fiscal Committee at 8:15 AM, Community Development at 8:45 AM, Committee of the Whole at 9:15 AM, city attorney interviews at noon, and the commission night out at GRPS University at 6:00 PM.
Consent Calendar
- Resolution confirming reappointments of current members to various boards and commissions (CDAs, Economic Development Corporation, Brownfield Redevelopment Authority, Smart Zone): The resolution changes term end dates to June 30 or the first Monday in July to align with the fiscal year. Unanimously approved by voice vote (motion and second).
Discussion Items
- Board and commission vacancy report (Ms. Bosker): Noted that the Grand Rapids Housing Commission, Civil Service Board (May term expirations including Commissioner Sasi), Board of Art and Museum Commissioners, and Civilian Appeal Board have upcoming term ends. The clerk's office will send more information to move appointments forward.
- First Ward vacancy (Clerk): 10 candidates cleared vetting (income tax and treasurer's department). Interviews scheduled for April 17. The committee discussed the interview format:
- Commissioner Saucy suggested the possibility of narrowing down candidates rather than interviewing all 10, noting that the committee is not required to interview all who pass vetting.
- Commissioner Senor expressed preference to give all 10 an equal opportunity to appear.
- Consensus: Interview all 10 candidates, each for 15 minutes with 5-minute breaks between. No alternative interview dates will be offered; candidates must be available on April 17.
Key Outcomes
- Reappointment resolution passed unanimously.
- First Ward interview schedule: April 17, 15 minutes per candidate, 5-minute breaks; all 10 candidates who passed vetting will be interviewed.
- Next steps: Clerk's office to coordinate housing commission and civil service board reappointments; information to be provided for upcoming meetings.
- The committee also noted progress in aligning board terms and streamlining processes ahead of fall elections.
Other Business
- Meeting adjourned at 8:09 AM with reminders of the day's subsequent meetings and evening community event.
Meeting Transcript
Okay, good morning, everyone. We will call the committee on appointments to order at 8 a.m. Okay. You need to unlock your iPhone first. And Siri wants to be a part of it as well. All right. We uh have a very long agenda this morning, just two items. Uh the first is a resolution confirming reappointments of current members to various boards and commissions updating their term and dates. So much. So moved support, moved and supported. Comments on this, uh staff or colleagues? Ms. Bosker. Yes, just uh this is something we've been talking about for a few weeks, um probably a few months, and this is reappointing members to the economic development boards, so like the CIA's um economic development corporation and Brownfield Redevelopment Authority and Smart Zone, um reappointing them for terms that end at the fiscal year end. So June 30 or first Monday in July rather than December to align with the fiscal year and also ease some of the end of year reappointment burden for all parties involved. Yeah, thank you so much for your work on this, Miss Bosker. I'm very happy of where we came to that. I really appreciate you and the clerk's office working on this. Any further comments? Seeing none, all those in favor? Aye, aye. Motion carries. That brings us to a discussion on the current board and commission vacancy list, Miss Bosker. Yes, not a lot has changed. We um I did want to just highlight that there are some boards with terms ending soon. Um the uh Grand Rapids uh housing commission has terms ending soon, so that's being discussed, and hopefully we'll have appointments and reappointments shortly. Um, and then the civil service board also has May term expirations. There's two members that are up for reappointment. Well, three, including Commissioner uh Sasi. So those I'll send more information and we'll hope to move those all along in the next couple of meetings to keep things on track, and then um there's also the Board of Art and Museum Commissioners and Civilian Appeal Board that I know are kind of on everyone's mind, and so we'll keep in touch on that information too. I gotta go down there because the battery's just oh sorry, yes, please. Yeah. There we are for the public. See our vacancies here. Looks like we are plugging our way through. We are, I know there's a lot going on, but we're still making progress. That's right. And I think getting the pardon me. And I think like you said, that work, thank you, of just getting people on the right cycles and that that's taken a lot of the work over the last couple of months, which will be important as you know the clerk's office will be actively involved with the elections that we have this year, and so I think getting all of as much as we can kind of cleaned up and process and procedures is gonna put us in a good place when we go into the fall. Thank you. Thank you, Commissioner. Uh and then uh do we have uh Mr. Clerk, if you want to discuss the uh first ward vacancy while we're here. I'll come back up. Um, yes, we had uh 10 candidates that cleared um vetting between from income tax and the treasurer's department. Um so there we're scheduled for April 17. I know it's a little bit of time, but there's spring break and we got a lot of other things that are going on right now. So we'll schedule that. So the what is the pleasure of this board for for me setting up a time frame? 15 minutes for them.
