1:22

Okay.

1:23

Um, some unfinished business from the past couple of meetings.

1:28

Um Memorial Day Parade, that is fast approaching.

1:32

Um with that, I did reach out to the Patriot Warriors to try and get them to follow us in the parade.

1:41

With it being the 250th birthday of the US, we would like to make the parade um stand out more patriotic than other parades in the past.

1:54

So if people have ideas, anything like that, please come forward, let us know how we can get um different organizations involved that want to show their uh patriotism, and if anybody has any sort of say like the Patriot Warriors, if we're not able to get them, but somebody knows some bike club that is in support of veterans, please let us know.

2:16

I would love to have um them follow us.

2:20

Um Mr.

2:21

Hughes, if I could ask for for those that may not know uh who are the Patriot Warriors.

2:26

So the Patriot Warriors is a bike club that traditionally, if there is a military funeral, military parade, something like that.

2:37

Um you'll get 20 to a thousand bikes that'll show up and they'll s pay their respect to the soldiers that are fallen or the member of the military.

2:49

Um with the parades and things like that, they love to show their support, so they'll show up with their bikes and the American flags and all the different branch flags on the bikes and just show a lot of representation and patriotism to what our country has done for us.

3:05

So it's just a way to get back.

3:07

Um but if anybody has any ideas as far as Memorial Day, uh please speak up, let us know, and we will try to work that because before we know it, Memorial Day will be here.

3:20

So we got one more meeting.

3:22

One more meeting.

3:28

Okay, uh veterans-friendly businesses.

3:31

We've been talking about that over the past few months.

3:34

Um I got word that the chair for the chamber has stepped down, so there is they are in work to see the new chair.

3:47

Uh with that we had some decals that were designed for the veterans businesses as far as showing support to the community uh for the vet uh for the different businesses that are here.

4:02

Uh one of the ones that was put out there.

4:05

If you can pull it up on your phone, Mr.

4:08

Suffecle, please.

4:09

Um it's an American flag and it's in the shape of a star.

4:13

It's red, white, and blue, very patriotic.

4:17

That is my vote, and I want your guys' agreement on that or speak otherwise.

Summary of Proceedings

Green Veterans Advisory Commission Meeting - April 7, 2026

The Green Veterans Advisory Commission met on April 7, 2026, at 5:05 PM in Council Chambers. Chair Mike Hughes called the meeting to order with four commissioners present and one absent. The meeting covered Memorial Day parade planning, veteran-friendly business decals, a presentation from the MAPS Air Museum, and the launch of a monthly veterans rally point.

Consent Calendar

  • Approval of March 3, 2026 meeting minutes: Motion by Commissioner Burgess, seconded by Commissioner Suffecool, carried unanimously (4-0).

Public Comments & Testimony

  • None.

Discussion Items

  • Memorial Day Parade Planning: Chair Hughes emphasized making the parade extra patriotic for the 250th birthday of the United States. He reached out to the Patriot Warriors motorcycle club and asked commissioners to suggest other bike clubs or organizations to participate. Commissioners also discussed obtaining a classic or military vehicle for the parade; Chair Hughes offered his own vehicle as a backup.
  • Veteran-Friendly Business Decals: Chair Hughes reported that decals had been designed. Commissioners selected a star-shaped red, white, and blue decal. They will work with the city communications office and the Chamber of Commerce (once a new director is hired) to print and distribute decals to businesses. A letter to businesses will be created.
  • Green Veterans Rally Point: Chair Hughes announced a new monthly event at Kittles restaurant, the "Green Veterans Rally Point," held the first Tuesday of every month from 6-8 PM, starting that evening (April 7). The event aims to connect local veterans and gather feedback for improving veteran programs.
  • MAPS Air Museum Presentation: Keith Bucklew, new Executive Director of MAPS Air Museum and retired Marine aviator, introduced himself. He described the museum's veteran resource hub (monthly meeting to coordinate services), upcoming events including an "America 250 honoring veterans" event around November 8, and the return of the P-51 Mustang and a new Harrier aircraft. He also noted a visit from the Confederate Air Force with B-17 and B-25 bombers during Green's Freedom Fest, offering tours and flights. The museum offered meeting space and partnership opportunities.
  • Memorial Day Ceremony Speaker: Valerie Wolford, Communications Manager, requested suggestions for a speaker for the Memorial Day ceremony. Mayor had suggested Keith Bucklew; commissioners were asked to consider him or another influential community veteran. Bucklew expressed willingness to discuss availability after the meeting.
  • Veterans Hall of Fame Induction: Mike Elkins reported progress on a nomination application due June 1 to Columbus. They have a candidate and will meet next week to complete the narrative and nomination form.
