The Greensboro City Council met on September 1, 2026, at the Katie Dorsett Council Chambers. The meeting began with a closed session to consult with legal counsel on a claim and personnel matters, which passed unanimously. Following the closed session, the council reconvened for ceremonial items, consent agenda items with multiple public speakers, public comments on non-agenda topics, council discussions on public safety and employee benefits, and final action on remaining business items.
All right, welcome to the September one, twenty twenty-six meeting of the Greensboro City Council. Uh uh I have a council member who is willing to make a motion. Yes, I move into to go into a closed session. Point eleven A three. To consult with the city attorney in order to preserve the attorney client privilege to consider and give instructions to the city attorney concerning the handling of or settlement of a claim. And second, further pursuant to NCGS one forty-three three eighteen dot eleven, sections A three to convene and close session to consult with independent legal counsel and to preserve the attorney client privilege concerning the city's legal rights, obligations, potential exposure, and available lawful responses arising from communications, complaints, claims, or pending proceedings involving a council-appointed employee. And Councilmember Crawford. And that passes unanimously. We will be back as quickly as we can. Thank you so much. Overlooking the lake at Country Park is a quiet place of remembrance and reflection. The Guilford County Veterans Memorial honors veterans past and present with more than twelve hundred personalized brick pavers. So Susan Danielson is the chair of the Guilford County Veterans Memorial Board. Hello and welcome. Thanks for having us. So glad to have you here. So let's go back a few years back to 2002 and when the memorial opened. How did we get to that point? How did it get started? Where did the idea come from and how did it happen? Well, this started long before 2002, as we've learned construction takes a while. But this was started when a group of uh businessmen and community members who were veterans came together and they said, you know, there's no place in in Guilford County to honor veterans. And they thought that that was a big gap in the proud history and traditions of Guilford County. Um so they put their brains together and they came up with a plan to put together a veterans memorial. And it wound up being in Country Park behind the Greensboro Science Center. It's it was formally dedicated uh in September of 20 uh 2002. It was formally dedicated in September of 2002. And we hope to rededicate it this upcoming September. We've had a lot of work going on and we'll we're excited to share uh all of the renovations and modernizations that have been going on there. Okay, we're gonna talk about that in a little while. But first, for those who haven't visited, uh, what could they see from 2002 to now? Well, currently they're going to see a lot of mounds of dirt and holes in the ground, uh, which is a sign of progress. So we're super excited about that. Um but what what you will see is uh is a rotunda with um several uh hundreds of bricks, um personalized bricks that are in that rotunda, and a very large granite obelisk. Um that's the centerpiece of our of our memorial, and that centerpiece, that rotunda and that obelisk will remain. Everything else is going to be refurbished and and modernized. But what you're going to see hopefully is a place of uh peace and calm and quiet reflection and a way to honor veterans because that's what that memorial is all about is honoring veterans. Also, events happen from time to time there. Yes, we do have events there. We have two per year currently, one uh on Memorial Day and one on Veterans Day. Actually, we do them the the Sunday before because we know everybody's holidays are full. Um yes, we usually have guest speakers and color guards and uh we sing the national anthem.
