Huntington Planning Board Meeting Summary – June 3, 2026
Huntington Planning Board Meeting – June 3, 2026
The Huntington Planning Board held a meeting on June 3, 2026, to address a range of agenda items including a public hearing, appointment, subdivision approvals, site plan waivers, and extensions. Key discussions centered on the Harbor Road Plat subdivision, where the Eaton’s Neck Fire District advocated for road completion, and the Cold Spring Hill Development, where a revised access plan gained neighborhood support.
Appointment – Eaton’s Neck Fire District
- Ed Carr, representing the Eaton’s Neck Board of Fire Commissioners, clarified the fire district’s position on the Harbor Road Plat. He advocated for completing the connection between North and South Harbor Road to improve fire safety, citing past incidents where fire apparatus became stuck on Bayberry Road. He proposed reducing the proposed road width from 24 feet to 18 feet and using the savings to extend the road, bringing it within 48 feet of completion. He also addressed traffic concerns, noting that the current route via Locust Lane would remain 300 feet shorter, mitigating GPS diversion. The board tabled preliminary approval to review the new information.
Public Hearing – Map of Cold Spring Hill Development (Lots 9-11 & part of Lots 8, 12)
- The applicant, represented by Patrick Hobish and engineer Doug Castellano, presented a revised plan to access the proposed Parcel B via West Main Street instead of a shared driveway or the private back alley. The New York State DOT provided verbal preliminary approval for the curb cut. Neighbors Tammy Wood (11 St. Marks Place) and Maylyn Andreessen (3 Carnegie Avenue) spoke in support of the revised plan, thanking the board and homeowner for addressing traffic and environmental concerns. They requested a permanent restriction on future access to the back alley. The applicant opposed a restrictive covenant, stating the current plan sufficiently addresses concerns. The hearing was closed without a vote.

Meeting Transcript
Thank you. Thank you, everyone. Before we go into our regular agenda, we have an appointment and a public hearing. We're going to start with the appointment. And it's representatives from the Eaton's Neck Fire District. Please step up. State your name, please. And Ed Carr, 22 New Harbor Road, Eaton Sneck, representing Eaton's neck Board of Fire Commissioners. At the April 15th meeting, I think there was a discussion as to the position of the fire district Board of Commissioners. I just wanted to clarify it because two letters were sent in when we received the initial communication from the planning board asking our opinion. The commissioners had discussed it informally, and we thought that we were supposed to opine on the location of the hydrants on the road and whether we felt that was sufficient fire protection. We didn't believe it was within our purview to uh opine on uh the road and whether the uh the unimproved roadbed should be connected on harbor road. So we didn't think that we could uh have anything to say about that. Um I had reached out um in addition to being a fire commissioner for 10 years, I was also I'm also I just stepped down uh December 31st. I was president of the Town of Huntington Fire District Officials Association, which represents all 12 fire districts in the town of Huntington and meets monthly. And uh I had asked Paul Latuso, the fire marshal, uh, you know, I told him we sent a letter in about the hydrants, uh, but we're really concerned about the road, and he informed us well, if you guys are concerned about the road, that is within your purview, and you do have a right to say something about it. So we followed up with a second letter. Uh at the April 15th hearing, um Brian Brown was uh asked about the uh fire district's comments. He correctly replied that uh we did have concern about the road. Um I believe Mr. Wallace from the engineering firm had said though that it was a bit ambiguous as to what our position was. And uh unfortunately I was unable to make that meeting, so I just wanted to come in here and clarify uh what our position is. Uh personally speaking, I got involved uh Eaton's Neck Fire Department and the district because my house caught fire in 2004, and uh the responding fire truck actually got stuck coming down the hill on Bayberry, which uh if you look at your map, I don't know if uh Craig is able to or somebody's able to bring up the uh intersection of Bay Berry and South Harbor. That's a subdivision. So in order to enter this area of Eaton's Neck, you have to come down Locust Lane, which is the middle road uh to the left, correct? And then uh you keep going down right there. You've got to turn down Bay Berry. Bay Berry is a hill, it's a 25 degree slope. Uh if you get any kind of snow, um, it's uh pretty much impassable till the town's snow plow uh appears. Uh and that at the bottom of that is uh uh where the fire truck got stuck. So my house burned to the ground in 2004. Um about seven years ago, another home at 58 South Harbor Road, a few houses down from me, caught fire and uh a number of trucks backed up uh going up Bay Berry because they couldn't get down. Uh so it is a an issue. It's not just something that we're using as an excuse to ask that the road be improved. Um proposed uh plan up. So proposed plan has uh at the bottom of the uh the existing roadbed, I think it says 13 feet, which is the existing road. Um that's actually generous if you go maybe a couple hundred feet south of that. It's not shown on the page. The uh the width of the road is actually 11 feet, and then as you approach that area, it gets to 12 feet, and then finally 13 feet. Uh the developer is proposing to expand it to 24 feet, uh, which would be very wide for this area uh in the Eaton Harbors Corporation. That's the HOA for the two-acre zone in uh Eaton's Neck, the R80 district of 180 homes. Um, we're hopeful is that you'll reduce that width, and I think other speakers that we hear on April 15th also favored removing the uh any curbing, any street lights, and to have a reduced width. But if the developer were to reduce that width from 24 feet to 18 feet, that's um uh 612, 1824. It's a 25% savings in asphalt. And then if you go to where the proposed uh uh three-point turn area is right there, and uh you remove that three-point turn area and gain that uh square footage in asphalt, and you put that asphalt into extending the road, it brings you, I believe, within 48 feet of uh completing the road. Uh the roadbed is owned by the Eaton Harbors Corporation. That's an HOA formed in 1927. It was the uh subdivision map of properties of uh Sarah D. and Edith A. Robinson, Ruth R.
