Near the fort, two British soldiers were hanged in 1783, shortly before British evacuated Long Island. The soldiers had been convicted of robbery. For more than a century after the Revolution, the area was known as Gallows Hill. In the early 20th century, residents petitioned to change the name to Fort Hill. Thanks to the sacrifices of generations of Huntington Patriots, Liberty endures.
