Welcome to this Liberty Minute, part of Huntington's celebration of 250 years of American independence. Platt Carl kept an inn on Jericho Turnpike East of Park Avenue in Dix Hills. It was the main meeting place in that area, and Platt Carl was an influential figure. In 1776, he was selected to the Huntington War Committee. British forces often stopped at his inn while on foraging excursions. Carl suffered great losses from the British troops. Early in the war, he was taken prisoner and confined in a New York prison for three months. Later, he and his family were violently robbed and beaten by loyalist soldiers who hung him in an unsuccessful attempt to have him reveal the whereabouts of his valuables.
