The Joplin City Council held its regular meeting on December 16, 2024, addressing a wide range of topics including oversight of special sales taxes, the ARPA federal grant deadline, major park projects (DORA and Ewert), funding shortfalls, and several ordinances. The meeting featured extensive public comment and multiple votes on emergency items to obligate funds before the December 31, 2024 ARPA deadline.
Good evening. I want to call to order the regular meeting of the Joplin City Council. Yes. I'm going to call to order the regular meeting of the Joplin City Council. Mrs. Nosh. Eternal Goddess, we begin another meeting of the Joplin City Council. We ask that you invest in the spot of your strength and wisdom to fortify us and guide us so that we may enhance the prosperity of our community and improve the quality of life for those we serve. Amen. Mrs. Carlin, I believe you have some special guests for us this evening. Yes, I do. This evening, to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance, we welcome Captains Bill and Deb Mendendorp. Now they are the captains of the Jasper Newton County chapter of the Salvation Army. And over the past year, they have served over 50,000 hot meals to over 520 families with over a thousand children in that group. The Salvation Army serves breakfast five times a week and lunch seven days a week. They have shower and laundry programs, they provide rental and utility assistance, as well as clothing vouchers for those in need. They also have food pantries in both Joplin and Carthage. Their family store profits and the ringing of the bells help support these services and programs throughout the year. So this Christmas, their goal is to raise 352,000 for their program in 2025. So when you hear that jingle jingle jingling outside there, please give generously. Captains. I pledge you to the flag of the United States of America. And to the Republic for which it stands. Now just so you know, they do have a red kettle right outside the doors out there. And if you felt inclined to get up and go put something in it, it ain't gonna bother my bother me at all or hurt my feelings. So and if you do happen to get up and leave, I think they'll be out there for just a little bit longer. They're actually gonna leave the bucket and uh till the end of the meeting tonight. So as you're exiting, you can also great. And I was out there talking with them briefly earlier, and if you've got a card or an apple pay or something on your phone, they've even got a cool setup out there. You just go tap your card, it'll automatically take your money. The salvation army has figured out how to take your money efficiently. Thank you guys for being here. And for the yeoman's work that you do. Roll call. Mr. Bard, present, Ms. Carlin, President, Mr. Coppel, President, Mr. Ditarr. Present. Dr. Farnum? Present. Mr. Jackson. Present. Mr. Lawson. Present.
