I rise today to acknowledge and designate the month of October, 2024 as fire prevention month, and recognize the week, October 6th through the 12th, as National Fire Safety, uh Fire Prevention Week, excuse me, in Kansas City.

Fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire.

Home fires have killed more than 2,700 people in the United States in 2022, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

And fire departments in the United States responded to three thousand or so excuse me, 360,000 home fires.

Roughly three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or no working smoke smoke alarms.

Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home fires almost in half.
