Um Honorable Mayor Pro Tim, it is my honor to stand today to honor the 2025 Launch KC cohort and that these startup companies or startups, along with other one the other 120 launch KC alumni companies.

Launch KC is an initiative of both the EDC and the downtown council that is designed to propel entrepreneurship in Kansas City while we while retaining and attracting innovative startups and technologies.

To date, Launch KC companies have created over 1,600 jobs and attracted over 450 million dollars of follow-up investment.

Over two-thirds of Launch KC companies are led by women and andor minorities.

In November 2024, Storytel, Source Easy Raw's Cyber Ship Technologies, SISU Scout, is that right?

Okay.

And Hilltop Technologies were the seven winners of the Launch KC grants competition for several hundred startups applied.

Each of these seven companies were identified as having the potential to be future job creators and economic engines for Kansas City.

Because you all have to do all the work.

You all have to put your life on the line, your livelihood on the line daily, and that is hard work.

And I just want to applaud you because you are the lifeline of Kansas City.

You are the businesses that make Kansas City run.

And I just want to thank you for all that you do to support and to make Kansas City what it is.

So thank you.

And I will just add uh to that uh congratulations to all of you and a thank you for creating jobs and and stimulating Kansas City's economy.

Also, as a small business owner, I know the challenges that you all face.

Uh but you know what, you all uh really are building a Kansas City that will be generations that will be here for generations to come, and I congratulate you and thank you all.

Uh it's great to be back today on behalf of the Launch KC Grants program.

Now I was here a few weeks ago for Social Venture Studio.

That is the other side of Launch KC, where we stimulate uh specific industry sectors.

Uh but the group behind me represents the 2025 Launch KC grants cohort.

Um again, I am Jim Erickson, Director of Strategic Initiatives at the EDC, alongside Tommy Wilson, the downtown council.

It's our organizations uh that put together launch KC.

Uh we believe that today's startups are tomorrow's job creators and economic engines, and that is why we do the work of launch KC.

Uh as Councilwoman Boo mentioned, uh, we have worked with over 120 companies that have created uh nearly 1,640 jobs and attracted around 700 million dollars of investment for our community.

But launch KC is nothing without the specific companies, and that economic impact is not created by myself or launch KC, it's created by the folks behind me.

Um and this is an incredible group.

Uh we have today uh Scout, a web-based application that streamlines workflows for veterinary hospitals, Cisu, uh mental health platform that combines software and telehealth services, providing organizations with holistic support, source easy, the first operating system designed to streamline the promotional industry's supply chain by simplifying uh sourcing uh production and distributed through automated technology.

RAS turning compliance on its head with AI powered intelligence to enable leaders to make risk-informed decisions and drive business growth, storyteller, a bibliotherapy platform that enables families to create personalized stories.

Now we all know that it's hard to find books that have characters uh and stories that we can relate to.

Well, now through Storytela, a child at children's mercy hospital can instantly be placed as the hero in their own story about trials and eventual triumphs.

We also have Hilltop Technologies, an innovative and customized approach to cybersecurity, and finally CyberShip, uh, which transforms warehouse management with an affordable modern uh platform to accessible to all uh three PLs.

So these companies, uh several of which have relocated to Kansas City from other markets, and several have already gone on to uh complete successful funding rounds, already contributing to the economy of our city.

And so we are very proud of each one of them and welcome them uh to continue to grow in Kansas City, and we love to have them in Kansas City's entrepreneurial DNA.

So I want to thank everybody here, uh, the city for their support of Launch KC and really through Launch KC the support of uh the startups behind me.

I was with Mayor Pro Tem, Councilwoman French uh last night for uh Harrison Sons 10 year anniversary, uh which is much more than an anniversary.

It's a testament um to the to the amount of work that has been put in, not only into your business but into Kansas City as a community.

Um you've moved tons of dirt um in this community um to develop something um that's beyond buildings.

Um you're developing people.

Um developing people in the 6th district, I might add.

So uh we're celebrating the 10-year anniversary of Paris and Sons construction.

Um they were founded in 2015, and they have delivered consistent high quality performance as a prime contractor for the city of Kansas City, uh completing more than 18 major public projects across the parks recreation, public works, Casey Water, and emergency building demolition.

They've also played a key role in several of Kansas City's most transformative developments, including Kansas City International Single Terminal Project, the Kansas City Streetcar Expansion, Three Light Tower, Google and Meta Data Centers, KCI Airport High Speed Connector Phases 1 and 2, and the MCC Penn Valley Engineering Technology Center, the Kansas City Zoo, and significant infrastructure upgrades across the region.

Through these impactful projects, Parish and Sons has helped modernize city's core systems, improve mobility, support technology technological growth, and enhance the overall landscape of the city that continues to expand and evolve and their leadership, uh ICC general building contractor, a license union signatory workforce, the commitment to safety of Straight and Kansas City's construction industry, and set a strong example for private partners.

Um this continues to go on.

I will just say that uh we're lucky to have you in our city and our city is better because of your impact, and we look forward to many many more years of seeing not only the development that you produce here uh within buildings and then tons of of earth that you will move, um, but the people that you develop in the process councilwoman French.

I just wanted to rise in honor of you as well.

I was very honored to be at the celebration last night.

And not only do you have a long list of impactful projects over the last 10 years, but just your determination and your dedication and as a small business owner um to all the trials and tribulation tribulations that you had to go through to get to that 10 years.

What was really prevalent last night was the community and the people and the people that you impact and how much how many people were there just to celebrate you and your business and everything that you have accomplished, and that's that's really the legacy.

I know all these projects are big legacies and everything, but it's the people that you impact, and that's your legacy.

So I wanted to rise and say thank you for everything you've done.

Congratulations on 10 years, a decade is a long time.

And so survive in the construction business, we know that that's not a small feat.

So not only are you a business owner, um, that's a really tough um industry, uh, especially for African American people.

I just wanted to say that I too was double booked, and so I missed it.

And then I texted her, like, oh my god, I miss it, I miss it in a panic.

Parish and Sons Construction has delivered high quality work on some of the most important public projects in our city, from parks and streetscapes to major infrastructure upgrades that support the way that we move, build, and connect.

And at the center of this success is Miss Fatima Parrish.

Her leadership vision and deep commitment to excellence have guided this company from its early days to becoming a trusted partner across Kansas City.

She has built more than a construction firm, she has built a model for what strong community focused leadership looks like.

And as a black woman, which has already been alluded to, leading in an industry where diversity is still far too limited.

Fatima is breaking barriers and setting a powerful example for the next generation.

Her determination, expertise, and forward thinking approach continue to elevate standards across our our region.

And I just want to acknowledge and congratulate you on 10 years, and as I said last night, I can't wait to see what the next 10 years brings.

So I um just want to say thank you, number one.

Um Mayor Pro Temp, Parkshaw, and the rest of the council for being instrumental in just having programs like the M NWBE and the DBE program.

And when you think about our very first project with the city of Kansas City, it was with uh the Parks and Recreation Department back in 2018.

Scott Overbay was a project manager that really made time to walk us through the beginning and the end of the project.

And we didn't know everything.

It was some costly lessons that we had, but learning how to submit a change order and understanding that you won't always get the price that you initially asked for, but there are other ways to ill uh to engineer in the field.

And so a lot of the times we would walk Santa Fe Trail over at Avala University, and we would go from the beginning of the trail all the way to the end with the contract manual in hand and a highlighter.

And I was taking notes because I was learning what it meant to be a small business, but what it meant to field engineer.

And so I just really want to say thank you, City of Kansas City, for some amazing, you know, faculty engineers and team members that have made, you know, this 10 years a blessing for us to continue pressing forward on to the next 10.

Hundreds of community members have taken part in this class over the 11-year journey, and the impacts are significant.

The goal of the program has been to encourage, inform, and and interest citizens in educating them by educating them about local government, facilitating dialogue and participation, empowering citizens with information and skills, and promoting community involvement.

Each year, members of our community take part in this class because of their commitment to the betterment of our community.

It is important that we continue to have community members with the same ethic.

And I want to take a moment to just really talk about some of the courses that they engage in.
