Today we recognize Miss Riva Simmons for her many years of distinguished and dedicated service to the city of Kansas City.

Reva's career with the city reflects a true commitment to public service.

She began in the finance and revenue department and later served in the former Capital Improvement Management Office, where she quickly became known for her professionalism, reliability, and strong work ethic.

From the very beginning, Reva demonstrated she was someone the city could depend on.

She later served as legislative aide in the city council office, providing steadfast support to Councilmember Melba Curls and Councilmember Sandra McFadden Weaver.

And even assisting the office of Councilman Jermaine Reed, which we know he needs a lot of assistance whenever needed in each of these roles, Reva ensured excellence and responsiveness in serving the citizens of Kansas City.

In 2015, Riva then transferred into the water supply and treatment division of the Water Services Department, where she served as a senior administrative assistant until her retirement this February.

Once again, she exemplified dedication, integrity, and unwavering commitment to doing her work at the highest level.

Beyond her professionalism and responsibilities, Reva brought heart and energy to everything she did.

She proudly represents the city in corporate challenge events, volunteered her time, encourage employment and engagement.

She also generally generously gave back to the broader community through organizations such as Freedom Inc.

NA and AACP and the National League of Cities.

Those who worked alongside Reva remember her infectious laughter, her positive spirit, and her ability to bring people together.

Whether encouraging co-workers to take the stairs for a healthier living, which I heard you did a lot.

With our elevator system, I think.

Riva is not only a remarkable record of service, but a long-lasting legacy of excellence, teamwork, and inspiration.

So on behalf of the mayor and city council, we extend our deepest gratitude and wish you the best and happiness in your retirement.

And to put it diplomatically, it was an adversarial time, but you were always so kind and uh treated me very well when that wasn't always the norm, just in general during that period of time, it was very difficult.

And I always remembered that.

Um I was a third district resident at the time, so councilwoman curls was my council member, and I knew that you always worked very hard on constituent services and doing all the things that a good council aide does on behalf of their council members.

So I wish I'd known you were in the water department.

I actually didn't know you were in the water department.

I'm gonna come out there and buy you lunch sometime.

Maybe we can do that uh sometime soon.

But we are we have been blessed to have you, and uh it was noted in Councilwoman French's comments, your laugh, your infectious smile, and your joy for being at the city.

You won't see that everywhere in the city organization, but you're somebody who I think frankly showed that love of your community each and every day with everything you did.

So please keep doing that here in Kansas City, and we have been blessed to have your service all this time.

As I have for the last um over a decade, I think.

To recognize February 23rd through March 1st, 2026's eating disorder awareness week.

This year's theme is everybody belongs.

It recognizes that individuals of all backgrounds and communities are impacted by eating disorders.

And with awareness that we can commit to change, reminding those impacted that you are not alone.

Ashley was diagnosed when she was in sixth grade.

And you know, now she's 27.

She's married, she lives in Atlanta.

But it's a continuous she's in recovery and she has been since she's in high been in high school.

But it's something that she always struggles with.

And I want to speak to people who are listening.

If you've never sought recovery and you think that you are struggling with an eating disorder, please reach out for help.

If you are in recovery, know that it is a constant struggle.

She, as some of you all know, was uh training for a marathon that she was gonna run last year and had an injury.

Um I know that she wouldn't mind me speaking about this, but training um for a marathon and having to um to take in more calories to meet the needs of training um is a struggle.

The discussion of Ozimpic and the um the public eye right now is a struggle for those who are faced with body image issues.

Um but I think it's important for all of us to know and recognize, and as we interact with other people, that we all come in different shapes and sizes, and we're all here to get along with people and to respect each other, and so um on this national eating disorder awareness week.

Um, I just want us all to recognize that we don't necessarily know what others are going through, and that um we should be mindful of the words that we use and how we interact and always reach out and be willing to give um a helping hand and encourage people to seek help.

And I um Children's Mercy Hospital wasn't able to be here today.

Um that is the one one of the clinics that Ashley um was um saw uh had um treatment, and I would encourage anyone that's listening to seek help through a clinic like Children's Mercy Hospital.

We will give the um uh resolution to them and get that to them, but um I just wanted to make sure that I stood up on this week that we recognize it.
