Um, this is your time to work with our illustrious uh HR department and our benefits administrators, that they can actually walk you through the process of what it looks like to change your benefits so those benefits work for you.

So you're in the proper plan that actually meets your needs, your specific health care needs.

Um Councilman Boo and I sit on the healthcare trust.

We go over diligently um what the health care plans for the city look like, and it was uh Miss Watson um brought this to the attention that we need to uplift this time, right?

So I am so thankful that our HR department and our our benefits administrators are having an open enrollment uh an open enrollment celebration.

It's called Scoring Big with Your Benefits on Friday, March 13th, 2026, from 10 a.m.

to 6 p.m.

And they will host this fair where employees can work one-on-one with our human resources staff to make changes to their current plan.

There will be fun activities, food trucks, and much more will take place at the convention center ballroom A and B at 301 West 13th Street.

Um there will be uh as as I've been told, there will be transportation to this to this fair.

I've had a very unique opportunity over the last 20 years to be directly connected to the city benefits, first as an employee for the city in the benefits office, and then as an employee for Blue Cross and Blue Shield as a vendor where the city was my client, and now back in the benefits office.

So I've been able to see and experience both sides of the table.

It is my opinion that the city has some of the richest benefits in the greater Kansas City Metro area.

With that being said, we do have a challenge.

Our challenge is communicating and educating our over nearly 5,000 employees on the rich benefit package that we offer.

Over the last two weeks, the benefits office has conducted 30 in-person and virtual pre-open enrollment meetings.

And we still have 15 more to do over the next two weeks.

That is still not going to get us in front of the majority of the people, the ones that are in the field that really need to understand how to use their benefits before they need to use their benefits.

That's why open enrollment and the benefits fair is so important.

We really encourage directors to encourage their employees to come out and visit us.

Have that opportunity to get in front of vendors and ask those questions.

Let us help you enroll in your benefits before March 20th.

Because March 21st, benefits will be closed.

Then we will not be able to, Mr.

However, as you all know, uh the schedule, the case the agenda got really long with other matters, and so we weren't able to hear it this week.

However, uh, we are still recognizing Ghana Independence Day, which is actually tomorrow.

And so I have uh actually solicited my intern, my new intern to actually help me do this special action.

So I will have her introduce herself and then uh read the proclamation or special action.

My name is Morgan, and I'm a student at UMKC, studying political science and English.

This recolution recognizes shared economics, culture, and historical ties between Kansas City and Accra Ghana.

Accra, Ghana, endorsing formal cooperation between Kansas City and Accra, Ghana and the Kansas City Ghana Committee and honoring Ghana's Independence Day.

Kansas City and Accra, Ghana share key similarities and regional economic anchors, centers for entrepreneurship, both investing in workforce development, technology, infrastructure, and small business growth as a part of their long-term strategies for economic competitiveness and shared vibrant arts and music communities and diverse populations that contribute to each city's cultural identity and global outlook.

And the mayor of Accra has expressed interest in the sister cities partnership with Kansas City and then building a strong collaborative relationship between the two cities and Kansas City is considering via separate ordinance the formal establishment of sister cities relationship, which could create new pathways for trade, business development, educational partnerships, cultural exchange, tourism, and innovation benefitting residents and businesses in each city.

And the Republic of Ghana celebrates its independence day each year on March 6th, marking its historic achievement as the first nation in sub-Sahara Africa and gaining independence from colonial rule and recognized around the world as an event civilizing freedom, democratic governance, economic self-determination, and cultural pride.

Here in Kansas City, we are fortunate to have a vibrant Ghanaian community that contributes greatly to our city through leadership in health care, education, business and entrepreneurship, and civic engagement.

This honor reflects Accra's commitment to youth development, learning, and expanding opportunity through education.

It is my honor to recognize the Kansas City Ghanaian community and thank you all for showing up so well in all of the Ghanaian wear that you have.

Um is been amazing.

And so I just wanted to make sure that we um um talked about that relationship with uh the descendants of slaves, uh descendants of Africa here in America and the welcoming open arms that Ghana has for African Americans here in the States.

So um thank you.

Um we really really appreciate you coming and sharing with us on it today, and I will look forward to that dual citizenship opening back up soon.

I'm with you on that though, uh, and and hope for it all.
