I don't know that.

0:01

All right, I'm gonna call the meeting of the Historic Preservation Commission to order the first item or the minutes from last meeting.

0:09

I move that we approve.

0:12

Second, Martin.

0:12

Any other discussion?

0:14

All those in favor?

0:16

All right.

0:17

I'm in favor.

0:18

Okay, thank you, Chris.

0:20

Okay, 303 Kennesaw, the bears.

0:23

You've got two applications, so we'll do them one at a time.

0:26

The first one is the pool and the next.

0:29

No, I got it wrong.

0:30

First one's a chimney, next one is a pool.

0:32

So if you just want to come up and introduce yourselves, tell us about your project, and we'll ask any questions.

0:38

And while they're coming up, this is the Archibald Howell House.

0:42

This is one of the most significant houses in all of Marietta.

0:45

So I really congratulate you on purchasing that house and doing a great job.

0:51

Neighbors of us.

0:52

Yeah, that's a really important thing.

0:57

Yeah.

0:58

Beautiful.

0:58

We love your house.

0:59

Yeah, we do.

1:04

My son lives there now at the corner of Stewart in Kennesaw.

1:06

Okay.

1:07

Okay.

1:07

Yeah.

1:08

North corner.

1:08

Yeah.

1:09

Yeah.

1:10

And then Steven lives where which where do you have?

1:12

At least next door.

1:13

He's actually our neighbor, yeah.

1:15

So you're you're company of all your neighbors.

1:21

Okay, I'm sorry, go ahead.

1:23

All right, yeah.

1:24

So we are hoping to shore up the chimneys.

1:30

Um they're letting water and rodents in currently.

1:34

Um and they're not in very good shape.

1:36

Uh so stabilizing them so that they don't fall or you know, pose any sort of danger.

1:43

Um, in particular the the chimney um the pots that are on there right now.

1:48

Um they don't they're not actually set in anything.

1:52

Um there's also like there's three of them.

1:55

The middle one is just sitting on bricks.

1:58

It's there's not three flues in there, so it's not supported by anything.

2:03

Um getting those down.

2:06

And I thought in your in your application, you said those are not the original ones, right?

2:11

The terracotta.

2:12

Yeah.

2:14

Okay.

2:15

Any other questions, comment?

2:17

Well, it seemed like you uh did a good job to prepare a case here.

2:22

Um it sounds like to me, is if I as I read this without going to study the house myself, but taking what was here in the package and your representation of it, there's two that are not original that don't match the others.

2:35

Uh correct?

2:37

The the chimney stacks, uh so the main stacks are original, but the pots on top of are not original.

2:45

Uh there's some improper design to match the type of uh flu there is, is that correct?

2:50

The the brick?

2:52

Yeah, the um there's there's three of these pots set up there, but there's only two flues.

2:58

So it it doesn't make sense.

Historic Preservation Commission Meeting Summary - January 05, 2026

The Historic Preservation Commission convened to approve minutes, address two preservation applications for the Archibald Howell House at 303 Kennesaw Drive, discuss organizational donations, and address a member's potential resignation. The commission expressed strong support for the new owners' efforts to stabilize and maintain the historic property.

Consent Calendar

  • Minutes from the previous meeting were approved unanimously upon motion by Chris and second by Martin.

Public Comments & Testimony

  • Commissioner Neighbor: Expressed full support and excitement regarding the purchase and repair efforts of the Archibald Howell House, noting the property is a significant historic asset in Marietta and that they have watched the house with anticipation.
  • Commissioner Neighbor (Comment on Pool): Confirmed the pool was in rough shape and needed repair; supported the removal to eliminate a safety hazard and potential eyesore.
  • Becky (Commissioner): Noted via discussion among peers that she is likely resigning from the commission due to difficulty driving and attending meetings in person. She has served since the beginning, approximately five years.

Discussion Items

  • Chimney Restoration (303 Kennesaw Dr):
    • Applicants proposed stabilizing three chimney stacks to prevent water and rodent intrusion and to address structural dangers.
    • Clarification was provided that the main stacks are original, but the terracotta pots (pots) are not original and were improperly installed (three pots for two flues, with the middle pot unsupported).
    • The commission verified the proposed repair plan involves removing the non-original/unsafe pots and matching the design properly.
  • Pool Removal (303 Kennesaw Dr):
    • Applicants requested removal of an in-ground pool and patio installed in the 1980s.
    • The property owners stated the pool is in disrepair, currently poses a safety risk for their toddler, and will be filled in with plans to eventually install a formal garden rather than a pool or patio.
    • Some commissioners noted the pool is not currently visible from the main street (Kennesaw) but approved the action based on the safety and renovation context provided.
  • Organizational Matters:
    • The commission acknowledged a thank-you letter regarding a $1,000 donation made to "The Ramble" and discussed the upcoming event in April.
    • Proposed a certificate to be presented to Becky upon her departure to commemorate her five years of service.

Key Outcomes

  • Chimney Application: Approved unanimously. The commission endorsed the plan to remove the non-original pots and stabilize the original stacks.
  • Pool Removal Application: Approved unanimously. The commission authorized the removal of the existing pool and patio and subsequent filling of the area.
  • Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned, with plans to honor Becky's tenure with a certificate.
