It's an honor to be able to proclaim 2025 Fire Prevention Week as this week, and also a proclamation for community planning month.

I'm going to first ask Chief Eric Bullinger and the members of our outstanding fire department to please step forward.

Um designating fire prevention week in Mason City.

And um this month actually marks a milestone for the Mason City Fire Department.

The first major renovation of the fire department headquarters since it opened 50 years ago.

And the ribbon cutting will be 10 a.m.

It's also fire prevention week.

And to celebrate the department, we'll be hosting an open house that'll be Sunday from uh one to three with demonstrations and hands-on activities and fire extension uh extinguisher training.

Our firefighters do an incredible job of keeping all of us safe and provide fire prevention week reminds us that safety starts first with uh each of us, and one of the themes this week is uh uh charge into fire safety with training on how to uh take care of your lithium eon batteries.

Um but I did want to take this opportunity to remind everybody about the battery safety.

Um this year's theme with the lithium ion batteries.

Um just a reminder not to throw those batteries in the regular trash, don't throw them in regular recycle bins.

Uh there is uh problem that we're having with lithium ion batteries in the last eight to ten years that seems to be growing uh nationwide where we're having fires in unexpected places.

Um so make sure you don't just throw them in the trash, put them in a uh a proper battery recycling bin.

And as you'll know, before uh a renovation, we had a recycling bin out front of the station, the front entrance that's no longer there in the front of the station, and we're proud to have it, or glad to have it on the north side of the building now.

You can pull right off to the side of the street, walk a couple of steps and put your battery in that that bin there.

Councilman Lee opposed the loss of local control, and Councilman Yeski voted no, criticizing the state’s removal of local authority over manufactured/mobile home ADUs. Councilman Simmons suggested drafting a resolution opposing the law for a future meeting. The motion carried 4-2 (Latham and Yeski voting no; Lee voting yes reluctantly).
  • Item 15 – “Parkway” Definition Clarification (First Consideration): An ordinance to define “parkway” in the zoning code as the area between sidewalk and curb. Passed unanimously (7-0).
