Um I have not yet asked for anybody to offer the pledge, so I will offer that.

We will move into item one point one, which is public comment.

We will move on to item number 3.1, principals' comments and reports.

I do have um an email that was sent in from Principal Wilson from Hughes Middle School.

And Marco, do you want me to read that?

I'll just read the exact email.

Um, I won't read that it's his name at the end and phone number and all that, but uh he did want to just make a mention that on August 5th, and we've got a copy of this if anybody needs it.

August 5th is when the teachers and the staff return to work.

August 7th is the back to school activity from noon to 1 30.

August 13th is their raising canes reward for the S back scores from must have been from last school year.

And then he said that you've added six new staff members, two teachers and four support staff.

Um, the two teachers are Estelle Hafen and Guy.

I'm gonna probably butcher this.

Is it Thielman?

If it's Thielman, great.

And then support staff is Myrica Mejia, she's a SPED aide.

Maria Leon is an AP secretary.

Arts Mortensen is campus security, and Alfredo Avila is computer tech.

And he said they're projecting to start their school year with 548 students.

And then he continued on with saying that Hughes Middle School will be getting security upgrades, including updating their camera system as well as the roof and the HVAC upgrades during the school year.

They've not been given dates on when those projects will begin, though.

And he does say thank you for all of your support.

We're looking forward to a great year.

So that is Principal Wilson's report, I guess.

Um I mean public.

This one does have no public comments on this one.

So seeing no other principals here, any comments on the, I guess we could when we move to board comments, we'll talk about the calendar items.

So we will just move into item 4.1.

And if any principals do show up, we will revert back to item 3.1 and let them talk.

So um administrative items, this kind of applies to the principals as well.

So we will just cruise right through this one.

And it was for discussion of possible action regarding the principal's goals from last school year, including an assessment of their performance.

And this is all personal from them, and we wanted to review their goals for the upcoming school year and discuss how CAV can best assist with anything they have for the upcoming school year.

So we'll open this one up to public comment.

Marco, do you suggest we just make a motion to table this one since it's they didn't present anything or I mean we can just take no action on it and I'll just add it to the next agenda next time we meet.

Or I I know it's kind of hard hearing how we can help without them here.

But if anyone has any ideas they'd like to discuss now, we can use that time of now as well.

Um the next item is is kind of a discussion that we had at the tail end of last meeting, and that was one of the suggestions on how we might be able to to better help.

So we can discuss that one too when we get to it.

But have we heard anything from any of the principals on what their plans are for the upcoming year and how we're best suited to help.

I haven't heard anything except from Principal Wilson.

So might be on vacation still.

Yeah, July's a hard month.

Okay, so I mean, I think the suggestion would be to take no action on this one and move it on to the next agenda.

So we'll yeah, we'll move on.

We'll take no action on that this one and move on to item number 4.2, which is a discussion of possible current status and future plans for security measures, access points, controlled access, and upgrades for schools.

Um any public comment on this one.

I don't see anybody standing up.

So um the discussion and possible action on this one.

Principal Wilson did mention that they are they have security upgrades camera system, but that's the detail that I got from him.

So any further discussion that we want to have on this one and how we we feel we might be able to you know help the principals, Jeff.

Uh actually, I'm the one who brought that up at the last meeting.

And my concern is obviously security for all schools and trying to make it uniform.

Um it's my understanding that CCSD, exactly what's happening at uh Hughes right now, is coming in this year doing some upgrades.

They don't upgrade every school at the same time, same year.

So they may have good upgrades, but the others suffer or lack, I shouldn't say suffer, they're lacking upgrades.

Um I firmly believe from my background for what I've seen happening that all schools should have controlled access.

And we only have one school that has controlled access right now, and that's Virgin Valley.

The other three do now.

Elementary or high school I'm sorry, elementary.

It's the elementary that has.

I thought it was the yellow entry.

Yeah, it's the elementary.

Sorry about that.

Yeah.

So you know, my thing is shouldn't always just come with complaints.

It's not a complaint, it's just an observation, but trying to come up with suggestion or solution to the thing.

And I know it my limited time on this board is to see what we can do to try and assist things if we can.

Um I don't know what resources we have to help out with this, how we can engage the community to help out with some things, but I I'd like to see things with the schools we can to get them all up to almost the same level of security.

And at least with the controlled access.

I know they're moving forward with the signage that signage, the um shades are putting into the windows, and more of the schools are getting that and having that now, which is good.

Um I just like to see it, yeah, if we can get the control the access thing taken care of.

Hopefully, we never need to worry about it, but there's other places that they thought they wouldn't have to, and it's happened.

And so that's just my input there.

Do we think is it an issue of money?

Is it is the reason why things aren't happening?

Um, we had yesterday Joan Ebert and um Lydia Dominguez here, so we can contact them because they seem to be very, very open to helping us and coming out here.

So if it's financial, we'll have to find out from the principals what they need.

Um, but I know they had put they didn't put bulletproof, they had put the stuff on the glass, but it was not bulletproof, and we definitely need to have bulletproof to be you know once we get going.

So um we can contact, and I guess you've got a really good relationship with them.

You seem to know that.

I mean, I know Lydia, but I didn't really know Joan.

So maybe you could ask them for money now.

But if if that's what it is, if it's financial, we can work together and we'll and I'm sure that's what it is.

You're really on point with that.

Because when I first got on the board, I met with each principal because I wanted to introduce myself and get to know them.

I think they're all open to security upgrades.

I don't think there's one of them that was like, no, I don't want to do that.

Yeah, that's financial.

They're all on board with letting it do it.

There's no um pushback there or anything else, it's just the financial thing.

I I can also let them know I we did sign the paperwork this week, so they're gonna be getting their checks.

And they're not here to get them.

Um in uh you know, making some assumptions, you know, working for a public entity, um, having been on previous public entity boards, yeah.

That you can you fit so much into a fiscal year, and you do as much as you can with that fiscal year money, and then you move on to the next one, and you just have to space it out and you you prioritize where you have to prioritize, and sometimes that does mean that things get pushed down, but I think we can reach out to um Lydia and Joan and see what they might be able to do.

So and I'm I'm more than willing to we reach out to I have I have a pretty good relationship with Lydia as well, so I can reach out to her.

Yeah, and she's and and she's come in and visited at the water district a few times as well.

So she's awesome.

She's fabulous.

So I'll reach out to Lydia and see what we might be able to do to expedite at least the controlled access portion of it.

Um because I know we just did that at the water district in a different fashion so that it's all electronic versus the key fobs.

So it's less hackable but more hackable all at the same time.

So I'll reach out to her uh early next week if I get to it tomorrow.

I'll reach out to her tomorrow and I'll keep everybody updated on that.

Um thing with that controlled access is they really need to make sure they secure the back door to the teacher's lounge, because in almost every school in the district you can walk through the back door.

So maybe we whatever system they put in place, they can just put a swipe up there too.

Um there is a meeting on Tuesday at the Veterans Center.

It's gonna be all day.

So that's when the council's gonna be meeting, so it's gonna be workshops, and then we'll actually do the tech from there.

So on Tuesday, I think it's from yeah, it's from 9 to like three, four o'clock.

Oh, actually, five because tech is at 2 45.

Yeah.

So this Tuesday.

So we can we can get you some of that info.

Um, so at Mesquite Works Team Center, we're having our first annual back to school fair on August 1st from 3 to 7 p.m.

So it's a Saturday.

We're gonna try and hand out school supplies um and do some activities out with the kids as well as we have some water activities planned for August, you know.

So um yesterday at uh chamber lunch, uh there were five or six students from the high school, and they're they're putting together um an event, and it's from FFA, it's the tree gala, and they're going to be having um at the holiday inn, they're doing the uh trees again where you decorate the trees and have different people come in.

But they do need some um some things like the trees, they need vendors, they need raffles prizes, performers, et cetera.

So, whatever we can do to help the students, um, and I think it's the young ladies, that's who was at who was at the event um yesterday.

And it's from in November 18th to November 21st, and their setup is the 16th through the 17th.

So you'll be seeing flyers, and I'm sure you're gonna see this all over the city because we have till November.

Uh, but just wanted to give them a quick heads up because they were wonderful.

They were really they were great yesterday.

So and they'll be flyers out in the hallway.

That is a that's a wonderful event.

So they're good question.

Probably ours was fake, the water district did a fake, they were mostly fake.

Because it's a lot of maintenance, otherwise, it's a lot to then they raffle those off and that they're actually pretty cool.

Oh, yeah, we're gonna we're gonna hit up the animal shelter.

Nice.

I just want to get this on the record as a also a reminder to myself that the next meeting on Thursday, October 10th is gonna be the last meeting of the year for us.

Um, so I'm gonna put on the agenda to talk about what schedule we want to implement for next year, um, whether we still want to meet once a quarter every third third Thursday.

And I also don't know if I'm getting ahead of myself, but we'll have an art at large position open.

Um, so we'll be needing applications to fill in that position.

Hi, uh Chantal McAllister with the College of Southern Nevada.

I'm the site coordinator.

Just wanted to come in and give a quick update.

Um we are getting ready to start our semester August 24th, uh, with some of our standard uh gender-led classes for our degree seeking students as well as HVAC, CNA, and Phlebotomy.

Uh, but I'm super excited to announce we have been awarded a grant through the MISCI Community Fund that's being processed through the Wyoming Community Foundation to launch some community-based courses, including e-bike and e-scooter safety classes, um, and then some more kind of job-ready skill-based courses like introduction to AI, uh, using Canva for marketing purposes, um, how to create a website with Google, and job ready skills.

And that grant will allow us to not only launch those classes, but then also pay to train local instructors to teach them and for the students to take them for free.

So we're hoping to do like a big kickoff sometime this fall and a community feedback session after we've launched them for the first time.

So stay tuned.

But I I did hear mention of maybe e-scooter, e-bike safety.

Can you touch on?

I didn't, I wasn't able to hear what you were talking about.

Yeah, they were talking the other night in the council about how they approved uh the rules for the you know for the e-bike and stuff under the ages 17 and under.

You're gonna have to wear a helmet.

Oh perfect.

We'll have to tap right into that.

So I wanted to get that to the schools too, you know.
