Mesquite Public Arts Commission Meeting - October 19, 2026

The Mesquite Public Arts Commission convened on October 19, 2026, at Mesquite City Hall. The meeting covered updates on several public art projects, including the Next Generation statue for Fire Station No. 2, the status of bulldog statues, poet laureate appointments, and grant-funded initiatives. The commission also discussed the Second Saturday event and reviewed financial standings of various grants.

Consent Calendar

  • Approval of September 21, 2026 Meeting Minutes and October 19, 2026 Agenda: Motion by Karen, seconded by Bonnie, unanimously approved.

Public Comments & Testimony

  • No public comments were made during either public comment period.

Discussion Items

1. Second Saturday Update

  • Commissioner reported the October Second Saturday event was well-attended with food trucks and a large crowd. The MPAC booth had visitors, and the event is considered a success going forward. The next Second Saturday is scheduled for November 14, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (though one member recalled 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). The commission discussed staffing the table; several members indicated availability.

2. Update on "The Next Generation Statue" for Fire Station No. 2

  • Fire rescue representatives Jason and Mary Ann presented an update on the life-size bronze statue of a firefighter, a little girl, and a dog for the new Fire Station 2 on Horizon Boulevard. The total cost is $77,000. As of the meeting, $24,415 had been raised, primarily through brick sales. Impact donated $540 for an 8x8 brick. The brick fundraiser is the main effort, with additional small events (craft fair, bingo) scheduled. The commission suggested participating in Second Saturday to increase exposure. MPAC agreed to share a table at Second Saturday to assist with outreach.

3. Update and Status of Bulldog Statues

  • A meeting was held with Becca and Travis regarding the bulldog statues. The item will be presented to the City Council on October 27, 2026, as an administrative item (not consent). Commissioner Marco indicated they would attend to answer questions.

4. Update and Status of Poet Laureates

  • The commission announced two poet laureates: Kaylee (junior) and Ross. They were recognized at a recent council meeting. Both will recite at the "Thousand Flags" event on November 11 (Kaylee) and the closing ceremony on November 15 (Ross). Photos of the council recognition were shown.

5. Update and Status of America 250 Grant

  • The grant funded three projects: (1) a mural by Miles at Reliance; (2) utility box wraps at Fire Station 2 (completed) and Fire Station 3 (expected by end of October); and (3) a "Dance Mesquite" dance floor painted in the courtyard. Commissioner Caitlin coordinated the dance floor painting, which took approximately five hours over two to three days. Remaining paint supplies are stored at the First Friday storage locker at the Jimmy Hughes Center. The grant completion report has been submitted.

6. Update and Status of 2026 Nevada Main Street Grant

  • Most grant projects are complete except for a suffragette-themed wrap on an OPD box on the walking path near Fire Station 1. Artist Rochelle has had delays; completion is pending. The wrap estimate is $4,500, but only $2,500 remains in the grant. Morph is seeking an additional $2,000. Additionally, the commission still owes Rochelle $2,500 for artwork (the three 3x5 paintings). Commissioner Karen provided a financial overview: the 2021 project fund is exactly on budget ($0 balance); recent expenditures from the mural fund covered the fire rescue brick and poet laureate awards. The MPAC Morph account balance is $1,651. The commission discussed the lifespan of wraps (five years due to sun) and inventoried OPD box responsibilities: some are owned by private entities (Eureka, Su Bar, Rotary clubs, HOAs), while MPAC/Impact is responsible for boxes on city property.

7. Commissioner Comments and Reports

  • Bonnie had no comment. Caitlin presented the Dance Mesquite project report, thanking volunteers and noting the remaining paint. Photos of poet laureate events and the Heritage Center amphitheater opening were shared. Future Second Saturday table staffing was discussed. Commissioner Karen noted upcoming city council elections (two seats open: Paul Von Last and Dave Bennett) and encouraged public interest in serving on the commission.

Key Outcomes

  • Consent calendar approved.
  • Fire Station 2 statue fundraising to continue with added Second Saturday exposure.
  • Bulldog statues to be presented to City Council on October 27, 2026, as an administrative item.
  • Poet laureate recitations scheduled for November 11 and 15.
  • America 250 Grant completed; grant report filed.
  • Nevada Main Street Grant: Additional funding sought to complete suffragette wrap; artist payment pending.
  • Next meeting: Not explicitly scheduled, but Second Saturday on November 14 and council meeting on October 27 were noted.
