1:25

Brad.

1:25

Yeah, thanks, Tim.

1:26

Um as I said, there should be a short meeting tonight.

1:30

What I'm really trying to get approval from for from the board tonight is our tree list, which we've been working on um over the last few meetings, and I want to give Holly credit before that.

1:41

I'm gonna turn it over to her to just to explain um, you know, the spreadsheet that she put together um sitting in the audience tonight is our planner um just for the record.

1:53

Um Mr.

1:55

Pierce and I had a conversation with him today.

1:58

And if we ratify the draft tree list today, um he's at work has worked extensively on the tree ordinance, and that means that we can then um turn that over to the planning department and they can use that as a reference.

2:12

Um so it's kind of important that we we get this tree lift um approved tonight.

2:19

Um and speaking with with Mr.

2:21

Pierce, we don't have to bring that back to council because of the verbiage is already in the the ordinance.

2:28

So he passed basically needs a master list, which was what this will be.

2:33

Um so this is something that we have been working towards, and um I'm really hopeful that if we get that done tonight, then we can um turn that over to Mr.

2:41

Pierce tomorrow and we can really move forward with that.

2:44

But on that note, I'd look to Holly just to you know bring us up to speed on on what she's done since the last meeting with the list.

2:51

Thanks, Holly.

Speaker 3

2:53

Okay, well, I think I mean if you've seen it, so you know that what I did is take that list that was alphabetical by botanical name, um, sort those plants by uh size into three categories, which are um over 50 feet, 30 to 50 feet, and up to 30 feet, and then um organize the the um the categories that we might want people to have access to, the information we might want them to have access to.

3:30

Um we have height and width, um whether it's native to Delaware or not.

3:36

Um there's a column for growth form, which I did not fill in um because I have just want an opinion on that.

3:44

Um soil moisture, whether it's tolerant to urban conditions, um, like the harsh urban conditions, um, whether it has flowers and fall color.

Unassigned speaker

3:57

Um,

Speaker 3

3:57

and then we have both common and botanical name.

4:01

Um it's not really pretty.

4:03

Um I don't have

Unassigned speaker

4:06

um

Speaker 3

4:06

I don't have Excel.

4:08

I just have an open um access program that I worked on.

4:12

So it would be nice um if somebody that had Excel or something could like take the the headings at the top and turn them so that they're in a diagonal so they don't take up so much space.

4:25

Um, but I didn't have the ability to do that.

4:29

Um the growth form part I wasn't sure, you know, there's different verbiage that's used for that to define whether um something is um whether you want to use conical or pyramidal or you know what what terms you want to use.

Unassigned speaker

4:50

So I was kind of looking to people that are in the landscape field um to see what they think is the most common verbiage to use there, and I can go back and fill that in for sure um to make that more useful.

Speaker 3

5:09

Other than that, um I guess it's just also open to any comments that anybody has about you know how it's organized, or if you think that um I misrepresented something

Unassigned speaker

5:29

there.

Speaker 2

5:31

Well, again, Holly, I appreciate the work you've done for it in terms of making it pretty, you know, we can certainly take it from here and and you know, we would probably put it into some you know official sort of with city letter head and and doctor it up a little bit.

Tree Advisory and Tree Preservation Advisory Board Meeting – November 19, 2025

The Tree Advisory and Tree Preservation Advisory Board met on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, beginning at approximately 5:31 p.m. Board members Holly, Lee, and Tim were present, establishing a quorum; Holly participated virtually. No minutes were included in the meeting packet, so the board moved on. After a 15-minute public comment period with no participants, the board discussed and unanimously approved a draft city tree list, set its next meeting for February 18, 2026, and adjourned.

Public Comments & Testimony

  • No members of the public signed up to speak or joined online, so the 15-minute public comment period closed with no testimony.

Discussion Items

  • Draft city tree list: Brad introduced the item and asked the board to approve the draft list, which had been developed over the last few meetings. He noted that city planner Mr. Pierce was in the audience and that the list would serve as the city's master tree reference for the planning department. According to Brad, the tree ordinance already contains the relevant language, so the approved list would not need to return to city council.
  • Holly presented the spreadsheet she had prepared. She described sorting the previous alphabetical list into three size categories: over 50 feet, 30 to 50 feet, and up to 30 feet. The list includes height, width, whether the tree is native to Delaware, soil moisture, tolerance to harsh urban conditions, flowers and fall color, plus common and botanical names. A growth-form column was left blank because Holly wanted input on the most useful terminology, such as conical or pyramidal. She also noted that the document was created in an open-access program and could benefit from formatting improvements such as diagonal column headers.
  • Lee expressed strong support for the list, describing it as extremely helpful and comparable to nursery reference books. He said the growth-form information could be completed using resources such as the American Society of Nurseries.
  • Tim also praised the list as user-friendly and suggested changing the column header from native to native to Delaware to avoid confusion about acceptable non-native trees.
  • Board members discussed treating the list as a living document, reviewing it roughly once a year and updating it as new cultivars emerge or disease issues arise.

Key Outcomes

  • The board unanimously approved the draft city tree list by voice vote, with three ayes. The approval included follow-up work to complete the growth-form column, change the native column header to native to Delaware, and format the list for city publication and website posting.
  • The approved list is to be provided to the planning department, and no further council action is required.
  • No new business was raised.
  • The next regular meeting was established for February 18, 2026.
  • The board adjourned by unanimous voice vote.
