Speaker 2

0:36

Good evening.

0:38

So this year, this is just gonna be our annual yard waste and brush grinding contract we do every year.

0:46

This year, the only quote I was sent back.

0:50

I reached out to uh the TOB grinding urban forest services, and then the company Everest Industries bought the old company that we used to use, Atlas.

1:03

Uh he bought his equipment, so I reached out to him as well, but I did not get replies from either of the other companies.

1:09

So

Unassigned speaker

1:10

uh

Speaker 2

1:10

this is the company we've used for the last couple years.

1:13

It looks like his price went up about ten dollars an hour for the grinder and the cat 299 skid loader with grapple bucket.

1:23

Um mobilization is a little bit cheaper, it's about 50 bucks cheaper than previous years, but um then obviously diesel is gone up a little bit this last year as well.

1:36

So um I would expect it based on the amount we have to grind and all that uh to be very similar to the last year's, which was about eleven thousand dollars.

1:47

Um, and that one did include some damaged cutting teeth and some fabrication work, so while it goes as smoothly, we won't have those extra you know thousand dollars or so of charges on that.

2:01

So

Unassigned speaker

2:02

about

Speaker 2

2:03

the same price, you know, take into consideration the extra costs, hopefully subtract some of those incidentals.

2:11

So

Speaker 3

2:14

I have a question.

2:15

So we we we suck up all the leaves from all the residents using the VAC, you know, and then we we drop all the those leaves at a spot, and then this guy comes in and shreds them all.

2:27

It

Speaker 2

2:28

also includes all the yard waste from the drop off as well as any storm damage and anything that we pick up throughout the year, too.

Speaker 3

2:34

Okay, so this is a once a year type thing that we just we

Speaker 2

2:38

used to do it twice.

2:40

We do we used to do like a like a fall and then like a later fall winter.

2:45

Um is just leaves and one is more just brush.

2:49

Uh we found that the last two three years we've done just one grinding, and then it's you know, just come in, do it all in one go, and then it mixes the finer leaves with the branch material as well, kind of gives a better compost kind of final product to give back to the residents then.

Speaker 3

3:08

Thank you.

3:09

And then where so where do you store all that?

3:11

I mean, I know where we store uh the the malt uh the uh yard waste from residents for the season, but where do you store all the leaves until this guy comes in and does all this?

Speaker 2

3:21

It all gets brought out to the um I guess you we call it the farm, it's the airport.

3:26

Um Greenbush Road.

3:29

Yeah, okay.

3:29

So

Speaker 3

3:30

you just use some land out there at the airport to store it all.

Speaker 2

3:32

Yep, we just pile it all up there, okay, push it up into one big pile, and then they come in with their grinder, and we help we use our um our loaders as well to help move the pile around and speed things up as best as we can too.

3:46

So

Speaker 3

3:48

nice.

3:48

I I'll make a motion for approval.

Speaker 2

3:51

I'll

Speaker 3

3:52

say

Unassigned speaker

3:52

it.

Speaker 1

3:53

Okay, we have a motion and a second.

3:55

Any other discussion?

3:59

Hearing none, and I guess I'll ask the clerk to call the vote.

Summary of Proceedings

City of Monroe Board of Public Works: October 13, 2026 Meeting

The Board of Public Works met on October 13, 2026, at 4:45 PM in Council Chambers to consider the approval of a fall 2026 yard waste and leaf grinding contract.

Discussion Items

  • C.1 Review and Approval of Quote for Fall 2026 Yard Waste and Leaf Grinding: Streets Supervisor Lucas Neuenschwander presented the sole quote received from Urban Forest Services, the company used in previous years. The hourly rate for the grinder and Cat 299 skid loader with grapple bucket increased by approximately $10 per hour, while mobilization costs decreased by about $50 compared to prior years. The total cost for last year's service was approximately $11,000, which included extra charges for damaged cutting teeth and fabrication work. The supervisor anticipated a similar total for this year, potentially lower if no incidental costs arise. The service involves grinding all leaves collected from residents via the VAC system, as well as yard waste from the drop-off site and storm debris, all stored at the airport site on Greenbush Road. The board discussed the logistics of storing material and the shift from two grindings per year to one combined grinding, which produces a better compost product for residents. Alder Tolman made a motion to approve, seconded by Alder True Hart.

Key Outcomes

  • Approval of Quote: The board unanimously approved the quote from Urban Forest Services for fall 2026 yard waste and leaf grinding. The motion passed with ayes from all four aldermen present: Tolman, True Hart, Schaefer, and Frankie. The meeting then adjourned.
