Our department's gonna is doing some drills in the downtown um coming up later this fall.

Yeah, the company um the company that installed them uh went out of business and the technology, we just haven't been able to maintain it.

So as some of you know, um, most of you know, I think uh Marisol um got a new job um over the summer, and so we had an exhaustive search, and the winner, Abby Longcook.

Wow, I had heard that yes, and um, in case you didn't know, Abby used to work at the tech museum, so I think as uh uh good understanding working for a nonprofit and working with crazy people who walk in the door all the time is all about interactive or the tech the tech interactive formerly the tech museum of innovation.

So my favorite place and and so obviously um we're still going through some transition at the chamber.

Um Abby is part of the team now to look at um who will actually be leading the efforts for the downtown business association.

Um I have been doing a very terrible job of put for the last two months, so obviously I'm looking forward to my team stepping up.

Um so I wanted her to be able to sit in at least and uh see how the downtown committee works.

Downtown Committee Meeting Summary – September 1, 2026

The Downtown Committee of Mountain View convened on September 1, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. Chair Casper led the meeting, with members Shay, Peter, Vice Chair Baird, and Jamil present.   • Downtown Development Update (6.1): Diana reported that a portion of the Hope Street hotel application has been submitted. The Smith Brothers mixed-use project (705 SDN) may remove its underground parking garage due to cost, replacing it with surface parking (within state law transit proximity exemptions). Construction at 590 Castro has begun with material delivery; demolition will start after October Fest.
  • Castro Street Update (6.2): Mandorotella highlighted upcoming events: Concerts on the Plaza run through September 25, Music on Castro continues through October, and a pilot Makers Market starts September 18 (four dates through December). Over 50 local artists will participate; more than half are from Mountain View and half are first-time makers. The market will be on the 300 block, planned around happy hour/dinner time.
  • Art & Wine Festival: The 54th annual festival will occur September 12–13. Lot 12 is unavailable due to housing construction; parking will be tighter. A new wine bottle sales area is added.
  • Summer of Soccer (World Cup): A mini soccer pitch and watch party drew approximately 10,000 attendees over the weekend. The entertainment zone required 8 police officers and $295,000 in city allocation. Positive business impacts: Sabor reported a 4× revenue increase. Lessons learned: need better promotion of the entertainment zone and enforcement of alcohol rules.
  • Bike Racks & Trash: A grant added more bike racks; some were strategically relocated. Committee members noted loose bike racks and overflowing trash cans, especially at a gelato shop. Staff will follow up.
  • Farmers Market Relocation: During 49ers home games, the market will use lots 4 and 8 (formerly lot 12). Long-term relocation is pending hotel development.
  • BIA Annual Renewal (7.1): Two Business Improvement Areas (BIA 1 from 1983, BIA 2 from 1991) generate about $60,000 annually from an average assessment of $176 per business. Funds are restricted to marketing; the chamber supplements with other resources. Staff will explore consolidating districts. A first public hearing is set for the next council meeting, with a second on October 13, 2026.
