Municipal Arts Commission Meeting - April 15, 2026
The Municipal Arts Commission met on April 15, 2026, at 12:15 PM. Chairperson Marissa Bowen presided, with board members Mark Michael Morero, Linda Key, Fred Spinowitz, Joe Guglielmo, and Kevin Jimenez present. The meeting covered three new sign/awning applications and two adjourned cases where applicants were absent.
Discussion Items
-
Case 08-2026 (Joseph Lanza): Application for one illuminated blade sign at 251 North Avenue for Monarch Dispensary. David Lanza presented, noting it was the only sign for this business, to be hung perpendicular to the building with push-through letters and vinyl to block direct light. The sign is 30 inches in diameter. The board confirmed it would be dim at night. Motion to approve passed unanimously.
-
Case 09-2026 (Deborah Mustich): Application for one awning with lettering at 75 Center Avenue for La Hacienda (new owner). Eric Santiago of More Group presented, showing a green sombrero and white lettering. The board asked about size compared to prior sign and color (hunter green). Motion to approve passed unanimously.
-
Case 10-2026 (Tina R. Curry): Application for two channel letter wall signs and two double-sided projected signs at 175 Huguenot Street. Ashley Castillo from the sign company presented, noting a change: they would install only one blade sign instead of two, replacing the existing sign of the same size. The sign on the back faces I-95 and is 12 feet tall, but smaller than the previous sign (which had a logo above wording). The front sign is also smaller. The board discussed variances for letter height, number of signs, and area. Motion to approve passed unanimously.
Key Outcomes
- Case 08-2026: Approved unanimously.
- Case 09-2026: Approved unanimously.
- Case 10-2026: Approved unanimously. The applicant agreed to arrange a free inspection before installation.
- Adjourned Cases: Case 19-2025 (Lloyd Silverman, awning at 138 North Avenue) and Case 2-2026 (Nicola Doyle, illuminated channel letter sign at 20 East Main Street) were not heard because applicants were not present. The meeting adjourned after a final call for these cases.
