North Main Street Task Force Meeting - November 5, 2025
The North Main Street Task Force convened on November 5, 2025, at approximately 10:30 PM with seven members present and five absent. - Providence Music Report / Traffic Camera Discussion (Item 2): Elizabeth, the court administrator, presented observations on the limitations of red light and speed cameras on North Main Street. She noted that cameras at the McDonald's plaza intersection are ineffective due to a string of green lights and a 14 mph threshold for recording violations. Only 7-9% of captured violations result in tickets after a multi-step review process. She highlighted issues with aging technology, vendor data inaccuracies (e.g., plate type mismatches), and lack of direct DMV access for third-party vendors. The city is currently out for an RFP for new camera infrastructure. Discussion followed on coordination of pedestrian signals, speed bump effectiveness, and the need for design improvements.
- RIPTA Metro Connector Update (Item 3): Sarah Engle from RIPTA provided an update on the high-capacity transit alternatives analysis. Four alternatives (bus rapid transit and light rail) are under evaluation along the North Main corridor from Central Falls to downtown Providence. Light rail options do not extend to the airport or CCRI due to cost and density considerations. A locally preferred alternative is expected to be selected in early 2026, with public engagement beginning in early 2026. The project aligns with the city's North Main Street design engineering project.
- Providence Streets Coalition / Temporary Redesign (Item 4): Representatives reported on the implementation of a temporary redesign at the North Main and Benefit Street intersection. This included striping, flex posts, planters, and a no-turn-on-red sign. Positive feedback was received, with notable behavior changes from drivers. The project demonstrated the value of vertical separation. The city is exploring similar quick-build projects elsewhere.

- A Walktober event was held on North Main Street with ARP.

Power connection is pending, targeting end of November. An additional 10 cobra-head lights are planned for the southbound side of North Main near the burial ground, contingent on tree trimming by RIDOT. Dark sky considerations were noted.
