Puyallup Senior Advisory Board Meeting - August 11, 2025
The Senior Advisory Board of Puyallup met on August 11, 2025, at 3:01 PM in the City Hall Council Chambers. The meeting covered updates on the Move Puyallup fitness program, the restart of Coffee with the Mayor, and a preview of the October housing presentation. New member Jenny Krzemien was welcomed to the board.
Consent Calendar
- Approval of the Agenda: Motion by Board Member Bradley-Mak, seconded by Vice-Chair Shipman, passed 5-0.
- Approval of Minutes: The June 9, 2025 minutes were approved by a motion from Board Member Bradley-Mak, seconded by Vice-Chair Shipman, passed 5-0. A discussion about adding a note on Angela Garcia's resignation was deemed unnecessary.

- One written public comment was received via the City Clerk's office and distributed to board members. The board acknowledged the comment but did not respond as a body.
Discussion Items
- Move Puyallup Update: Parks and Recreation Director Cody Geddes and Activity Center Supervisor Doug McCormick reported on the program's success:
- 100+ participants at the June 23 kickoff event.
- 50+ participants during the first yoga session.
- 20+ participants at both Tai Chi and Zumba Gold classes.
- 150+ branded shirts distributed in the first week.
- 60+ goodie bags donated by Salonish were given away via raffle.
- Total approximately 300 participants over the eight-week program (ending August 28). The program is free and will continue annually.
- Coffee with the Mayor: Mayor Jim Kastama will restart monthly "Coffee with the Mayor" sessions at the Activity Center starting in September. He will also present a proclamation supporting the senior center at the September 26 City Council meeting at 6:30 PM. Chair Boisture suggested expanding the program to include the police chief and city manager.
- Senior Services Report:
- July Cruise-In: Organized by Vice-Chair Shipman, featuring vintage cars. Next Cruise-In on August 21.
- Picnic in the Park: Held at Clarks Creek South Park with cakewalk, trivia, and themed food.
- Concert in the Park: Beatles tribute band “Paperback Writer” with reserved seating for seniors.
- Trips and Tours: Recent trips included Tulalip Casino/Seattle Premium Outlet (17 participants), Wallaby Wonders in Falls City, Scenic Brunch Train (waitlist for another trip), and Escape to Friday Harbor (ferry ride and shopping).
- Bus Drivers: Two new drivers (Julie and Bonnie) recruited, enabling more weekday trips.
- Three-Wheel Bike Program: Continuing but needing more volunteer "pilots" to operate the bikes on the River Rock and Foothills Trails.
Key Outcomes
- Housing Update: City Planner Kendall Wals will present at the October 2025 meeting. The presentation will cover Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) per House Bill 1337 (allowing two ADUs per lot in single-family zones) and modifications to parking requirements for higher-density housing. Chair Boisture requested clarification on which legislative changes have been adopted and what barriers to housing development remain. Staff noted the comprehensive plan was recently adopted by the City Council.
- Board Comments: New member Jenny Krzemien introduced herself (born and raised in Puyallup, 15+ years in senior industry, volunteers with Healthcare Providers Council of Pierce County). Board Member Bradley-Mak praised Move Puyallup and concerts. Board Member Erickson welcomed Krzemien and updated on UWT nursing student practicum placement for winter quarter. Vice-Chair Shipman announced upcoming hip replacement surgery. Chair Boisture thanked staff for their work.
