Yeah.

11:37

I'd like one of them equal down.

11:39

But there was a lot of there's a lot of parent involvement.

11:42

Like explaining when I was at the ticket table like the parents will come up and like be like we finished big or something.

11:48

So that's what they but we'll come back because we're gonna go back to the rock little justice equity and diversity.

11:56

Yeah, Julie, we'll go back to you.

11:57

Can you hear us now?

12:01

So sorry about the confusion.

12:03

You're on mute.

12:07

Okay, can you hear me?

12:08

There we go.

12:10

This tech is like I know we need young people to help us with the tech.

12:15

Exactly, exactly.

12:17

Thank you so much for joining us today.

12:19

I'm very excited to have you here.

12:22

Oh, well, thank you so much.

12:23

I'm sorry to be interrupting your meeting.

12:25

I'm sure you have important things to do and not deal with this tech issue.

12:28

Let me just try to turn up your volume a little bit.

12:31

Okay.

12:32

Okay.

12:37

Is that better?

12:38

Can you hear me better?

12:39

Um I think it might be on my end.

12:41

Let me see.

12:42

Oh, simple as a button on the TV.

12:44

Try that.

12:45

Can you hear me better now?

12:47

A little better.

12:48

A little bit better.

12:52

Let me see.

12:56

Let me see if I can make myself louder.

12:59

Is that better?

13:01

Is that better?

13:02

Yeah, yeah, there we go.

13:04

Okay.

13:06

Okay.

13:06

Hi, everybody.

13:08

Hi.

13:09

I'm sorry to be interrupting your meeting, but hopefully I'll just take a couple of minutes now.

13:14

Um my name is Julie.

13:16

And um, I'm doing some work with an organization called the Executive Learning Lab.

13:21

One of the things that we're doing is we're developing a justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion plan that's kind of guide the priorities and actions of the city over the next five years.

13:37

And in order to make sure that it's a really good plan, we have to incorporate information and suggestions from as many people as possible.

13:46

And it's really important that we incorporate your voice in this process because you guys are the future.

14:21

And so we're hoping to take just a little bit of your time to um participate in a structured kind of focus group.

14:47

But it would be really, really great if um well first of all it would be a good experience for you guys to be part of a focus group, because that's kind of a cool thing.

14:54

But also it would be really great to make sure that your voice is heard in the planning process.

15:00

Um, because you don't want just like a bunch of older people saying the things that you guys need.

15:04

You want to be able to say, like, no, this is what we want and need, and the um your input will like guide the next five years worth of some important services.

15:14

So, what is the best way to proceed?

15:18

So, do you all I know that Catherine has to leave early, but do others have time at the end of this meeting to meet with Julie to your focus group, or would it be better to try to schedule a different day?

15:30

So we're gonna do that.

15:33

Okay, so the consensus is a different day.

15:37

Okay, so what is the best way to schedule a different day?

15:41

Um what um are you okay with something that is this time frame good for you guys if you can meet like on a Zoom at home?

15:54

What's a good time frame for you all?

15:57

Four to six is a time frame.

16:00

So like the like around the four, four o'clock ish hour and other particular days of the week that are bad for you all.

16:09

I can't do Tuesdays or Thursdays.

Rockville Youth Commission Meeting - September 15, 2026

This meeting of the Rockville Youth Commission focused on debriefing the recent Timber Town Hall event, planning a new Instagram account, and scheduling a focus group for the city's Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) plan. The meeting also touched on the annual report and upcoming social events.

Note: The transcript references dates in May and June 2026 (e.g., a focus group on May 18 and a pool party on June 5), but the meeting was held on September 15, 2026, per the provided date. The reason for this discrepancy is unclear.

Public Comments & Testimony

  • Julie, representing the Executive Learning Lab, presented an opportunity for youth commissioners to participate in a focus group to inform the city's Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) plan for the next five years. She emphasized the importance of incorporating youth voices and offered to hold a separate focus group session. The commissioners agreed to schedule a dedicated focus group rather than doing it during the current meeting.

Discussion Items

  • Focus Group Scheduling: After consulting with Julie, commissioners decided to meet on Monday, May 18, 2026 at 4:30 PM for a 30-45 minute focus group. Melinda will distribute the Zoom link and coordinate with commissioners.
  • Timber Town Hall Debrief: Commissioners discussed successes and areas for improvement from the recent youth town hall. Key feedback included:
    • The slime station was messy and less popular; suggestions were made for less messy activities.
    • The “what stresses you out” board attracted mostly school-related answers; commissioners recommended broader prompts or age-specific questions.
    • The gym area was very popular but lacked organized games; future events should feature scheduled game times (e.g., at 6:00 PM) to focus participation.
    • Playlist curation was difficult; pre-planning for a clean playlist is needed.
    • Parent involvement at the ticket table was high; some expressed a desire for events without parent presence.
    • The large age range made some activities less effective; future planning should account for age-specific offerings.
    • Commissioners agreed to create a “how-to manual” for future events, to be stored in the Youth Commission Google Drive.
  • Instagram Account: The commission reviewed proposed elements for a new Instagram account (@rockvillemdyc). Key decisions included:
    • The bio must include a disclaimer stating “not affiliated with the City of Rockville” as a pinned post.
    • The disclaimer text must comply with ADA (white background, high-contrast text) and be repeated in captions for screen readers.
    • The bio will read: “Welcome to the official page of the Rockville Youth Commission. Advocating for the youth of our community since 2021.” followed by links.
    • A preliminary logo (showing a “Y” with stick figures) was presented; commissioners requested removal of the “City of” text and minor adjustments. The logo will be finalized and voted on at the next meeting, with a goal to launch before the upcoming pool party.
    • The account will soft-launch over the summer with story posts, and a designated Instagram manager will be selected in the fall.
  • Annual Report: Planning began for the commission’s annual report, due by September 2026. Danielle will take the lead on creating a narrative or slide-based report highlighting accomplishments such as the town hall, survey, school visits, and collaborations. Commissioners will provide feedback by August.

Key Outcomes

  • Focus Group Scheduled: May 18, 2026 at 4:30 PM via Zoom. Melinda will send the link.
  • Instagram Account Approved in Principle: The account name @rockvillemdyc and bio were agreed upon; the disclaimer and logo will be finalized at the next meeting.
  • Town Hall Improvements Documented: A how-to manual will be created by current commissioners for future cohorts.
  • Annual Report Process: Danielle will coordinate feedback and present a draft at the next meeting.
  • Motion to Adjourn: All in favor. Meeting adjourned at 5:24 PM.
