Um, I reached out to Judy Penny, that's her name right, um, to sort of find a way to honor our seniors and give us like chords with like a little city of Rothco pen, just like as a thanks for like your all of our accomplishments and all the hard work that we've put in over um this term on the youth commission.

4:20

I already started putting it together all like the Canva thing to post some our reach out to you guys, like probably be a text for like some informal voting on like what we think like a cool app would be what we want our um sort of logo to be because we can't use the city of Rocco logo, so like I've already been making like cool like logos that we could use like for the youth commission.

4:45

So I'll send it to you guys.

4:46

We can make changes.

4:47

I'm very excited about that.

Rockville Youth Commission Meeting - September 15, 2026

Note: The transcript indicates the meeting took place on April 8, 2026, but per instruction the date is recorded as September 15, 2026.

The Rockville Youth Commission met on September 15, 2026. The meeting covered approval of previous minutes, reports from the chair and staff, final planning for the Twinbrook Town Hall event, a discussion about the relocation of Wootton High School, community input for the FY27 budget, the annual report requirement, and updates on reapplications and the new Instagram page.

Consent Calendar

  • Approval of Minutes: The minutes from the previous meeting were approved unanimously.

Public Comments & Testimony

  • No members of the public addressed the commission during the community forum portion.

Discussion Items

  • Chair Report: The chair announced that spring sports for youth (K–8) were starting that day. The upcoming Town Hall event was scheduled for Friday, and a summer pool party was set for June 5. A ceremony with the Marine Council was happening that evening. The chair had reached out to Judy Penny to honor seniors with cords and pens. The commission received approval from Danzler for an Instagram page; the chair had already begun designing logos and content.
  • Staff Report: Staff reported that spring classes and track and field had begun. The annual Skate Jam event was scheduled for April 18 at the skate park, and an invasive species removal volunteer day was set for April 26 at the Nature Center. Staff noted that the new Instagram page would require establishing rules and designating a marketing lead, based on lessons from Tacoma Park.
  • Twinbrook Town Hall Event Final Discussion: The commission finalized plans for the event, scheduled for a Friday at Julius West Middle School. Setup was planned for 5:30 PM, with 17 registered youth from RCP (Rockville Community Partners). Activities included survey boards with sticker voting, basketball, slime-making, coding stations, and music. Commissioners would oversee stations, while staff assisted. Tokens for concessions would be printed from Canva. A preliminary visit to the school was arranged for the next day at 10:50 AM.
  • Wootton High School Relocation Discussion: Commissioners discussed the MCPS decision to move Wootton High School students to Crown High School temporarily while Wootton undergoes renovation. Concerns included lack of transparency, rushed decision-making, transportation logistics, loss of school reputation, teacher retention, and the impact on students who bought homes near Wootton. Some commissioners noted mixed emotions but saw potential opportunities. Staff compared the process to city government's approach of seeking community input. No formal action was taken.
  • Community Input for FY27 Budget: Staff reminded commissioners of the FY27 budget survey, which closes April 13. Commissioners were encouraged to distribute QR codes to youth and to consider submitting a letter to Mayor and Council. Previous youth commission survey results had been sent to the mayor.
  • Annual Report Discussion: The annual report for the commission is required by resolution. Leila, who led it last year, will again take the lead, planning to hold informal meetings over the summer and submit a draft by end of summer. The report should summarize accomplishments and can be modeled on last year's Canva presentation. The next meeting will be in May, and the last meeting of the school year is in June.
  • Old/New Business: Applications for the next term are open until May 3. Returning members must reapply. Staff noted increasing competition and urged self-reflection on commitment. The commission brainstormed names for the new Instagram page (e.g., "Rockville Next Gen") and discussed posting a "Meet the Commission" series. The page cannot use the City of Rockville logo but can reference the Rockville Youth Commission.

Key Outcomes

  • The minutes were approved unanimously.
  • The Twinbrook Town Hall event will proceed on Friday with detailed assignments and setup.
  • Commissioners will distribute the FY27 budget survey and consider drafting a letter to Mayor and Council.
  • Leila will lead the annual report, aiming for a summer completion.
  • Applications for reappointment are due May 3; interviews with Mayor Ashton will follow in June.
  • The Instagram page will be developed with branding and rules to be finalized in upcoming meetings.
  • The meeting was adjourned at approximately 4:05 PM.
