Rockville Youth Commission Final Term Meeting - June 10, 2026

The Rockville Youth Commission held their final regularly scheduled meeting of the 2025–2026 term on June 10, 2026, from 4:16 PM to 4:56 PM. The meeting covered approval of prior minutes, a chair and staff liaison report, a review of survey results from a Youth Town Hall, planning for the 2025–2026 Annual Report, and closing remarks for the outgoing commissioners. The commission also noted the launch of the Youth Commission Instagram account, discussed balancing youth interest in technology with community-building activities, and reviewed the status of applications for the next term.

Consent Calendar

  • No consent calendar items were presented.

Public Comments & Testimony

  • No public comments were received during Community Form.

Discussion Items

  • Survey Results from Youth Town Hall (Twinbrook Recreation Center): The commission reviewed six boards from the town hall. Key findings: creative arts, band, and music were popular; activities such as yoga received very few votes. Basketball and volleyball led sports interests, followed by racket sports, soccer, and football. For learning programs, video game design received the most interest, then coding, science, and engineering. A significant tension emerged: some commissioners argued that investing heavily in computer-based activities might reinforce youth isolation, while others emphasized responding to expressed interests and the potential for community building around technology. It was noted that many survey respondents were already playing basketball at the event, which may have skewed sports results. A participant shared an anecdote about a youth expressing fear regarding immigration enforcement, prompting discussion about the need for youth-focused civil rights resources and awareness campaigns.
  • Annual Report Planning: Vice Chair Daniela will lead the planning for the 2025–2026 Annual Report. The commission agreed to hold an in-person work session during June 21–27, 2026 (a date will be selected via group chat). A draft is due to staff by August 8 or 9, 2026; staff will then provide feedback, and the final version must be approved by the commission in early September 2026 for submission to the City Clerk. The report will cover accomplishments from the term, including the Youth Town Hall, budget committee participation, meetings with the JEDI team, grant work, and the creation of the Youth Commission Instagram account.
  • Staff Liaison Report: Jordan reported on the Summer Kickoff Pool Party (over 200 attendees, attended by Mayor Ashton and Councilmembers Leary, Van Greg, and Jackson). Summer camps begin the week of June 22, 2026, with most starting June 29, 2026.
  • Chair Report: Chair Layla acknowledged this as the last required meeting of the term, thanked commissioners for their work, and noted that summer camps are starting.
  • Old/New Business: The commission learned that the Youth Commission Instagram account is now active. Lynn reported that the city clerk’s office is reviewing applications for the 2026–2027 term and will contact reapplicants via email before calling.

Key Outcomes

  • Approval of Minutes: Minutes from the previous meeting were approved unanimously by voice vote.
  • Survey Data as Input: The survey results will inform future program planning, with a commitment to offering a mix of social/recreational, technology, and outdoor activities.
  • Annual Report Timeline: A work session will be held in June, draft due August 8–9, final approved in September.
  • Instagram Account: The Youth Commission will begin using the new platform for outreach.
  • Application Process: The city clerk’s office is proceeding with interviews for the next term.
  • Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 4:56 PM via unanimous voice vote.
