3:53

If you want to come to the counter, I'll read this and I'll let you say a few words after you.

3:58

Okay.

3:59

Whereas over 90% of the people who who die by suicide have a diagnosable and potentially treatable mental health condition, although often that condition is not recognized or treated.

4:09

The burden of suicide is estimated to cost over 510 billion dollars in medical work loss, value of statistical life and quality of life cost nationally.

4:19

And whereas the negative attitudes associated with mental health conditions and suicidal thoughts and behaviors work against suicide prevention by discouraging persons at risk for suicide from seeking life-saving, help and further traumatize the survivors of suicide loss and people with lived experience of suicide.

4:37

And whereas if someone can get through the intense and short moment of an active suicidal crisis, they're unlikely to ultimately die from suicide.

4:46

Asking someone directly if they're thinking about suicide will not put the idea in their head, and most will be relieved someone starts a conversation.

4:54

And whereas most people survive a suicide attempt, 85 to 95 percent go on to engage in life.

5:00

Everyone has a role to play in preventing suicide and can learn suicide risk and warning signs and encourage those who struggle to seek help.

Round Rock City Council Meeting - September 25, 2025

The Round Rock City Council met on September 25, 2025, at 6:00 PM in the City Council Chambers. The meeting included proclamations for Suicide Prevention Month and Hispanic Heritage Month, a presentation from the Human Resources department, approval of multiple resolutions and ordinances, and public testimony on the microtrenching ordinance. All votes were unanimous.

Proclamations

A representative from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, who lost her son to suicide, spoke about the importance of awareness and education. Councilmembers shared personal experiences and expressed support.
  • Hispanic Heritage Month: The council unanimously proclaimed September 15 to October 15, 2025, as Hispanic Heritage Month. Dr. Tarino, representing LULAC and a veteran, spoke about diversity, inclusion, and the contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities.

Staff Presentation

  • Human Resources Update: HR Director Sandra presented a department update, highlighting 622 new hires, 157 rehires, and 133 promotions in FY2025. The turnover rate is 1.46% (below national averages). The department is implementing new software (NeoGov Perform) for performance evaluations and employee self-service. Other initiatives include wellness programs, a leadership development program, internship program, and upcoming training on crucial conversations. Councilmembers praised the presentation.

Public Comments & Testimony

Public hearing opened and closed with no speakers. First reading approved, second reading dispensed with unanimously.

Key Outcomes

  • All votes were unanimous (8-0).
  • The microtrenching ordinance (I1) will return for a second reading.
