We first of all we have the welcoming remarks.

So we're going to start with Jovon Aggie from the mayor's office.

Well, it's my pleasure to be here this evening.

Uh, Francine, member of the commission, my name is Joe Vaughn A.

I'm the community relations director for Mayor Johnson.

Um, in his absence, he wanted me to let you all know that he's thankful for your time and commitment this evening to this issue.

Um, the work that you all are doing is vitally important, um, which you may or may not know that it's part of an officer next door initiative that it was launched earlier this year that focuses on four areas.

First being training, second being diversity, engagement, and then accountability with the Sacramento Police Department.

The work that you all are doing as this commission falls under the accountability component and has two focus areas bias free policing and then strengthening community police relations.

And so the mayor and council are looking forward to the work that you all are going to be doing and providing recommendations to the council on what are those metrics that can be assessed to ensure that we're making progress in those areas.

So again, thank you for your effort on this.

This isn't an easy issue.

It's something that is hurting many cities, states across this country, but at the same time we know that you all are competent people that can are up for the task.

So thank you for your time this evening.

Next, we would like to invite the city manager John Shirley to come up and say a few welcoming remarks.

Good evening and welcome everybody.

I want to start off by uh just noting for Bill that you're actually sitting in the hottest seat up there.

Uh as you know, I regularly sit there.

So anyway, uh good evening, everybody, and and uh I want to add my words of welcome to that of the mayor and all the members of the city council and thank you for agreeing to take on uh this uh this duty, and I guess I should add volunteer duty uh being on our uh police commission.

Uh to me, uh we have been fortunate here in Sacramento in that we have not had some of the incidents that have made national news headlines and continue to be uh of concern in this country.

Uh but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen here, because it certainly could.

And uh what it further indicates is that uh our city council and our police department are not content to be complacent.

We always think we can do better.

We always think that there is uh area to improve our police community relationships.

We always think that somehow we can do better in terms of communicating, somehow we can be better at making sure that incidents that have happened in other parts of the country don't happen here in Sacramento.

And we're asking you to help us achieve that.

I think this is a great move in terms of of uh putting our racial profiling commission kind of to rest, and in effect, putting together this police commission, which will have which has a broader charge and a greater ability to cover more issues and to make input on a variety of subjects, not just racial profiling as the former commission did.
