It's going to make our job difficult uh on this committee.

Uh I also want to thank you for your flexibility.

This meeting was originally scheduled for a nine, but because of quorum issues, we had to push it back to ten.

Our other choice was to cancel the meeting altogether and uh reschedule for another date.

And because we knew that would bring hardship to many of you, we decided to just push it back for an hour.

Um because of the number of candidates, depending on the uh will of the other committee members, we may take a stretch break uh at some point during the uh hearings.

So, with that being said, is anyone have anything else to add?

Let's begin.

So, our one and only item today is to conduct interviews for the Sacramento Ethics Commission.

So I have a brief announcement I'll make, and then as we call your name in alphabetical order, you'll come and step down to the podium and you'll be given two minutes to answer the questions that are on the screen behind me.

And when you have finished um your that portion of your interview, we're gonna ask you to step to your right to see Katea, and she's going to take a picture of you, which we'll include um in the future staff reports.

Um, for the members today, as you know, this is an inaugural committee.

This is the um very first appointments made for five seats, and we have no previous um appointees.

We do have um several, or excuse me, three, several withdrawals that I will not be calling today.

Byron Miller, Craig Siegel, Michael Fluke all expressed a desire um to withdraw after the agenda packet was produced, with one of them moving outside of the jurisdiction making him ineligible.

Good morning.

My name is Alexander McKay, and my interest in serving in this commission is to continue giving back to the Sacramento community.

When I first came to Sacramento, I had the opportunity to volunteer with nonprofit that helped victims of crime get the resources to put their lives back on track and become members of the Sacramento community.

I later helped with a nonprofit organization that advocated for the International Criminal Court and helped bring speakers to the Sacramento area to explain how work here in Sacramento can have an impact on international criminal justice and help improve the world by large.

I'm qualified for this commission due to my experience in law.

I'm currently a practicing attorney and regularly apply facts and argument to statutes in order to get legal remedies for my clients.

Additionally, I do have some experience adjudicating these issues.

My job was to listen to facts and arguments by people trying to have parking citations dismissed, and then applied those arguments and facts to the citations themselves to see if they were entitled to dismissal of the citation.

I'd like to use this experience and continue giving back to the community.

My name is uh A.

Block, and I'm a longtime resident of Sacramento.

Um my reasons for doing this are similar in that um I'd like to give back to a community that has been very good to me over the past years.

And um I've also been fascinated with the behavior of public officials.

It's something as a journalist, a long-time journalist uh here in Sacramento, a political reporter that I studied for many years and reported on, investigated for many years.

Um I've always been fascinated with the sort of the place where the letter of the law and the spirit of the law often collide and the complex issues that that are created by that.

Um as I said, uh I'm a journalist and uh retired now.

I also worked at the University of California for many years uh as the associate director of the university's uh center here in Sacramento.

And just throw a little monkey wrench into this right at the beginning.
