If you are here today to interview, um, you'll come up to the podium and we call your name, answer the questions behind us, and then you're gonna step to your right and have your photograph taken with Katia.

If you're here to speak to the committee and you are not an applic a candidate, you'll fill out an application in the back and turn it to the assistant city clerk.

Also, if you need an assisted listening or speaking device, you'll see the assistant clerk.

And they have two additional announcements that at this time it's a possibility that the August 14th PMPE meeting could be canceled and to make way for a workshop of the council.

And we're holding a special meeting of the PMPE on August 29th to accommodate our what is it, 63 applicants for youth commission.

We don't have minutes for this one as a special meeting.

So our first um item is interviews and nominations for the Measure U Oversight Committee.

Um, this is an unusual committee that in the resolution it states that people to be considered must actually interview in front of the commission, and we believe that Miss Woodson, who is in your packet, may not be here today.

Um, another thing about this commission is that they have not been able to meet this year due to quorum issues.

So we have um seven.

Everybody that you're gonna interview today is eligible for the at-large CE, and then you'll see in your packet um the candidates with special qualifications have been lined out in that fashion.

So we'll start with Howard Newton.

Hi, uh, my name is Mark Smith.

I'm a resident of Miss Ashby's district up in Atomas, Gone Thomas.

Um I'm interested in serving on this commission because I think that you know, particularly with the mayor's suggestion that this tax be extended and increased.

We're at a point where we need to really work to build community trust about how these funds are being used, um, and that the increase is justified and warranted.

Um, as for my personal background, I've been involved in policy and politics around the Sacramento community for a number of years.

I've actually been involved in a number of these local uh measures to raise revenue for specific issues, primarily related to transportation.

I think that that's a relevant example here because we saw what happened when the city and the county put forward a proposal recently and the voters turned it down.

Um I also have an MBA, so in my personal background, I'm familiar with finance and accounting.

I think the combination of both of those skill sets would enable me to be a solid contributor to this particular appointment.

Um answer any additional questions you might have of me and my qualifications.

Do you want to explain the process about interview and or are we going to make appointments today?

Uh yeah, we can.

Um we normally interview candidates uh at the first time we meet them and then go back and consider it and make the appointments at the next meeting.

Uh in cases where we have difficulty meeting a quorum, we may appoint someone at that meeting.

Uh, but the normal procedure is to uh make the selections at the uh following meeting uh that we do the interviews.

So in this case we do have quorum issues, so the majority of the board may uh decide to appoint someone at this meeting.

Chris Shipman, she's the current incumbent and C.

Good afternoon for the record and Chris Shipman, and why do I want to serve on this commission?

First, it's my belief that measure you uh committee like others is meant to serve as a bridge between the community and government, ensuring oversight and race and awareness on important community issues.

Secondly, I think because of my background in serving on numerous uh city and county commissions, I bring somewhat of a different lens and commitment to ensure that the work is grounded in evidence-based concept and community input.

And third, the measure you committee in my opinion requires some more in-depth involvement than other forms of public uh participation.

My experience and background, I have served on Sacramento County and City Boards and Commissions in the past.

This is not something new to me.

I'm a member of the Charter Point Neighborhood Association and have been for over 25 years.

I'm currently on a national basis.

I'm chair of the Amtrak Customs Service Customer Service Advisory Committee.
