So glad you could join us today.

Welcome to the Sandy City Council Oath of Office Ceremony.

Here today, we have three council members elect who are going to be formally and warmly welcomed back to public service in Sandy.

I'm Cindy Sharkey, and on behalf of the City Council, I have the distinct honor and privilege of welcoming my three former colleagues back to their seats on the council dais.

Brooke Christensen, where'd she go?

Brooke Christensen representing District One, Chris Nickel, representing District Three, and Brooke D'Souza, representing Sandy citywide.

Today's remarks mark an important occasion.

One we observe every two years to administer a very important oath, one that mustn't be taken lightly.

They aren't just words to be repeated, they're promises to be kept.

Sandy has a distinct form of government where the legislative and budgetary authority lies with the city council.

It's a big responsibility.

Brooke, Chris, and Brooke, your fellow council members, welcome you back and look forward to working with you.

We have members of our administrative staff and management.

We have Sandy some Sandy City Department Heads and Deputy Heads.

Dr.

Robbins and Susan Edwards have joined us.

And we have council members here to celebrate this occasion too.

I see Zach Robinson, I see Alison Stroud, Ryan Meekham is here, Marcy Housman made it, okay.

Um who did I miss?

Um did I say Chris McCandless was here?

Um we appreciate you're all showing up here.

And members of the South Valley Chamber have joined us as well today to mark this.

And finally, I want to uh welcome for sure the families and guests of the council members elect that have joined us as well.

Um first line of business.

I'm gonna um introduce to you Pastor Derek Philly, who is with Sandy Ridge Church.

He'll come to the podium and he'll lead us in an invocation.

Father God, we call on you today to uh join your favor on council members Christianson, Nicole, D'Souza, and Judge Farr, Lord.

Uh we pray for guidance for them, Lord, that you would bring them integrity, uh, that you would bring them courage, that you would bring them wisdom, Lord, above all, as they seek to serve our city.

Lord, we pray for your blessings on Sandy City.

We pray for prosperity, uh, we pray for justice, and Lord, we just pray that this would uh continue to be a city that grows and that prospers.

We love you.

Uh so the um Sandy City Fire Department is gonna lead us in the presentation of colors, and please remain standing when that event is concluded because Kate Barnes with the Jordan High School Madrigals, she's gonna sing the national anthem for us.

What's so proudly we held at the twilight's last gleaming whose broad stripes and my stars through the peril us fight or the rum parts we watched was gallantly streaming.

And the role against the bombs posting gave proof through a thought night.

The high flag was still there.

And now we're going to hear from our council members elect.

So guys, the way we're going to do this is you'll just come up one by one.

Brooke, you'll be first, Chris Nickel be second, Brooke D'Souza, third.

I'll let you come up sequentially and make some remarks, and then we'll get to the oath of office.

Good afternoon, everyone.

I love to read, and one of my favorite books contains a phrase that has been on my mind since the election results came in.

By small and simple things are great things brought to pass.

During my first term on the city council, I often felt that everything I did needed to be big, that it had to create immediate change or somehow fix complex problems.

But as I've reflected on these words, I've come to believe that real lasting progress often comes from consistently doing small and simple things well.

As I begin this new term, I want to commit myself to those small and simple principles.

First, to listen, to listen in order to understand and not simply respond.

Second, to be available.

I'm here to represent all the districts, all the residents of district one, and that means being accessible and responsive.

Third, to consider all perspectives, including residents, city employees who are so dedicated, and my fellow elected officials.

Fourth, to treat everyone with respect, regardless of our differences.

Fifth, to work hard and responsibilities entrusted to me.

And finally, sixth, to be kind.

Even when conversations are difficult.

My commitment is to focus on these small and simple things as I work to better represent Sandy City and its residents.

I am grateful for the opportunity to continue serving alongside my fellow council members and Mayor Zoltanski.

And I look forward to helping guide Sandy over the next four years.

So I just wanted to thank everybody and thank you to the employees that came.

Um I just want to uh thank everybody for being here, and I'm truly honored and deeply deeply grateful uh the trust that has been given to me.

I want to thank my family.

I have a great support system, and most of all, my husband, who is was in public service as a firefighter and taught me the meaning of community and what that means.

I want to thank my kiddos for always supporting me and uh encouraging me, standing by my side, and my mother and father-in-law, my brother-in-law, sister-in-law, and my uncle and aunt, and my good friend Judy.

They've all been a tremendous support to me.

Um my kids grew up in Sandy, and they I look at them every day, and and I feel comforted by the fact that they know what a community is, what a safe community is, and I continue, and I want to continue that.

The residents of district three, thank you for trusting me to be your representative.

I remain committed to careful careful stewardship and problem solving open communication.

I can I will continue to focus on safe neighborhoods and most importantly, I promise to keep on listening, be accessible, and to serve with humility and integrity.

Um very humbled and grateful to see so many friends and family and colleagues out in the audience today.

Uh, it has been a privilege to serve Sandy over the past four years, and I'm truly honored to have the trust that the voters have placed in me to be able to continue this work.

Looking ahead to the next four years.

My focus does remain on making informed decisions, weighing impacts, exercising fiscal stewardship, and governing with the long view in mind.

I am deeply grateful for my family and their constant support.

Uh I look forward to working alongside my returning and new council colleagues, even though the new ones are not really new, which actually I think is going to make these next um at least two years, right?

Until there's another election really impactful.

Um, I also really look forward to working and continuing to work with our city staff and our council staff.

I we couldn't do the job that we do without all of you.

So thank you for your dedication to the city and to us and helping um with those informed decisions that we are charged with.

Um I'm excited to begin this next term, mindful of the responsibility it carries, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to continue to to continue serving our community.
