City of Sandy AV Technical Troubleshooting Session - April 15, 2026
This session was an informal staff meeting focused on resolving audiovisual equipment issues in the city meeting room. Participants (likely IT/AV staff) discussed problems with an SDI encoder, HDMI connections, and microphone levels. No formal public business, agenda items, or decisions were made. The session ended with plans to schedule a service call and prepare for an upcoming planning commission meeting.
Discussion Items
- SDI Encoder and HDMI Cable Issue: A participant reported that the encoder was losing signal and showing black frames every four seconds. After tracing wires, a loose HDMI cable was found and reseated, restoring video signal. Reboot resolved the issue, but the encoder may need replacement.
- Confidence Monitor Plan: Staff discussed installing a confidence monitor in the chamber using a $150 receiver (as seen in West Jordan) to allow real-time video monitoring without additional setup.
- Microphone Audio Problems: During a previous meeting, microphones exhibited inconsistent levels and minor feedback. Staff adjusted internal mixer settings (Zoom volume, Xtron program volume) and later found that a PC volume slider had been changed, potentially causing the issue. After resetting sliders and restarting equipment, microphones sounded normal again.
- Upcoming Planning Commission: At the end, one participant mentioned that no one had appeared for a planning commission meeting and that they would schedule a service call for the encoder.
Key Outcomes
- HDMI cable reseated: Loose connection identified and fixed; encoder now provides stable video.
- Service call needed: Since the encoder may still have underlying issues, a technician visit will be arranged.
- Microphone levels normalized: No further action required after adjustments; audio now appears consistent.
- No formal decisions: This was a troubleshooting work session; no votes or official actions were taken.
Meeting Transcript
Yeah, that's what I need to this is what I need, so I have to start playing remember this is I don't know how couple minutes. But it won't play whatever might be a minute. Okay, but yeah, that's all I need that to that's the part I need running that I don't know how to start that. Yeah, so this is now for it. So that's a hard one. It's probably almost a minute and a half time. Okay. And when you're done, yeah. There we go. I think I work with that. I can hear you now. It's giving me giving me three. Not particularly. I've not done a whole lot of that, but it doesn't surprise me. It probably you probably have to save it in HCMS. Which is just like when you edit the website and you start to put a picture in there, it's going to be in the same spot. Yeah, that'd be my yes, but I don't know. I'm not sure hundred percent sure that I don't do a whole lot of putting the images in it. I've not done I do most of the back end stuff. Making it work in the back end and process stuff. I've not done a whole lot of yeah, but it just depends on what you're doing. And forwards is just really basic. This is this is a little bit more powerful. I guess you can reschedule it. Yeah, I got it back, but I think I have an issue with uh our SDI encoder. Um it's not working here. So I just this is the SDI encoder. And this isn't linking. But if I go fog it back into the SDI encoder, it's like every four seconds between black weeks, right? Yeah, just go black for a second. I'll plug it back in here one time. Which is the one which is the one I was worried about because that's the one thing we didn't replace in it. Uh just the whole brand that is deal with telling us the HDMI L and quota. Well, the the answer the answer was was uh here we go. I got the video back. But it doesn't blink coming out of the encoder so it's in the extra one. STI solidarity or something. We're hitting the point where that's what I'm saying. I I can do we get one of two ways at this point. Um I can plug in the list and see yes, yeah, it's off. I wasn't getting that plugged directly into the HD minus goes in the base controller, so it's something with with this is having an issue. I'm gonna plug it into it over my feeling and see if I can figure out how to do that. Um we might want to try to have a call and see if it's if they can sure if there's something I can't get into this, we'll have to have them come out and say if this is fab, or okay, we're gonna have to pay for end up paying enough to come out either way at this point because I error at least when I run the cable from that from that now down with the my monitor, it doesn't flee. And I just looked almost every four seconds, so you want to turn around. Yeah, and I I rebooted I rebooted this, and then I found that the cable had wiggled somehow were probably yesterday what we were getting in here, got slid out of this just enough that it wasn't seeded. So I reseeded it, rebooted it, and now I said that's why you're getting those signals is when we were back in here and I would trace the wire that probably grabbed it and pulled it just enough that it didn't look like it was undone, but when I pushed on it, it did slide it, and then I rebooted the device, and then all of a sudden now I had signaled my number model monitoring. Well, so Jason and I talked about this that we're gonna do the we want to do a confidence monitor. But uh like they had um you need the witness down into the uh West orders. They have uh essentially they intercept, they have a uh 15 dollar SBI um receiver that put that it takes the signal and it puts it out, it just sits in the middle of it, and it just you can just come in and then you plug at it and see it there without having to fluff with any and then you can see that that's what they that's what he called it in the confidence model page. Yeah.
