The Smithtown Town Board held its regular meeting on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at 2:00 PM in the Victor T. Liss Board Room at Smithtown Town Hall. Supervisor Edward R. Wehrheim, Councilman Thomas J. McCarthy, Councilwoman Lynne C. Nowick, Councilwoman Lisa M. Inzerillo, and Councilman Thomas Lohmann Sr. were present. The board unanimously approved all agenda items, including resolutions, personnel matters, and a conditional site plan approval. The meeting also included recognition of an employee of the month and a public comment period.

- Approved the minutes of the August 11, 2026 Town Board meeting.
- Approved all 21 Comptroller items, including fund transfers for environmental protection, cybersecurity, stormwater grants, opioid task force programming, highway drainage and road repairs, parks maintenance, animal shelter operations, and escrow releases.
Public Comments & Testimony
- Bob Semprini, President of the Commack Community Association, raised concerns about student safety on Town Line Road, citing a letter from the Commack school district superintendent delivered to board members; he asked the board to coordinate with the superintendent and Huntington officials.
- He also complained about ongoing weekend concrete-crushing noise and smoke affecting residents, questioned the removal of a tree sound barrier, and questioned why heavy industrial activity is occurring in an area he believes is zoned light industry.
- Supervisor Wehrheim responded that the Town Attorney would explain the property matter after the meeting, and that he was verifying a claim that Suffolk County now has jurisdiction over Town Line Road and had asked for truck exclusion signs to be removed. He pledged to follow up.

- Supervisor Wehrheim recognized Juliana Gomez, Senior Office Assistant at the Smithtown Senior Center, as the September 2026 Exceptional Public Servant for her work assisting seniors and supporting multiple center programs.
- The board, sitting as the Board of Site Plan Review, conditionally approved the site plan for 176 Southern Blvd LLC for 176 Southern Boulevard, Nesconset, for construction of a 4,123-square-foot two-story single-family dwelling with associated site work. There was no presentation because the board considered it a single two-story dwelling.

- SEQRA: The board unanimously concurred that the GAR Associates LLC Property Data Integration and Quality Assurance project is a Type II action, and issued a Negative Declaration for the 176 Southern Blvd site plan.

- Local laws adopted: Local Law #9-2026 regulating emergency scene solicitation and board-up services; Local Law #10-2026 updating recyclables rules; Local Law #11-2026 granting a 100% property tax exemption for permanently and totally disabled veterans.
- Other approvals included: addition of Boot Barn Inc. to the authorized shoe vendor list; highway road program amendments adding Meadow Rd West in Kings Park, Alexander Ave in Nesconset, Old Indian Head Road in Commack, and Coolidge Place in Smithtown; digital records retention policy; a $507,500 bond for computer hardware and software improvements; LIISMA conservation dog invasive species survey access; tuition reimbursement for Brooke Ferreira; acceptance of the Municipal Services Facility financial assurance report; donation of time for an Animal Shelter employee; and permits for the Smithtown Kickers 5K Turkey Trot, Commack High School Homecoming Parade, St. James Festival Day, and the annual 9/11 Naming Ceremony.
- Supervisor agreements authorized with Verizon New York, Inc. for a five-year cable television franchise renewal, Kings Park School District for solid waste disposal capacity fees, M&J Engineering, P.C. for semi-annual infrastructure inspections, Taylor Productions LLC, and Movies in the Moonlight for movie screenings at Callahans Beach.
- Settlements approved: Matthew Naples v. Town of Smithtown for $472.52, and Tracy Leshaw v. Town of Smithtown for $900.00.
- Personnel matters: all 15 items approved, including appointments, provisional-to-permanent status changes, seasonal reappointments, and title/salary changes for School Age Child Care staff.
- Julia Sack was appointed to the Youth Advisory Board for a term running September 9, 2026 through December 31, 2027.

Um proud to recognize one of the outstanding public servants who helped make the town of Smithtown such a special place to live, work, and raise a family. Each month we honor an employee whose dedication, professionalism, and character have made a meaningful impact on our community. Today it's my privilege to recognize Juliana Gomez, Senior Office Assistant at the Smithtown Senior Center. Juliana joined the senior center in June of 2025. An immediately demonstrated initiative, a willingness to learn, and a genuine desire to help others. The senior center front desk is a central point of contact for many programs and services. And Juliana handles a tremendous volume of calls while supporting our administrative staff, club leaders, transportation, meals on wheels, ICEP, disability services, and several other important programs. She took the time to learn about each service so she could provide accurate information, connect seniors with the right resources, and make sure every caller felt heard and cared for. Juliana is also one of the first friendly faces our seniors see each morning. She welcomes them, helps with grab and go meals, pickups, assists new members with registration, and steps in whenever her co-workers need support. What stands out most is the way she does it all with professionalism, patience, and a smile. For many of our seniors, the senior center is a place of friendship, independence, and community. Employees like Juliana are a big part of what makes it feel that way. On behalf of the entire town board and myself and the residents of the town of Smithtown, it's my privilege to recognize Juliana Gomez as our September exceptional public servant.
