Special City Council Meeting – August 21, 2026: Uncontested Candidates and Commission Interviews
The South San Francisco City Council held a special meeting on August 21, 2026, to consider whether to appoint uncontested candidates for City Council Districts 1 and 5, City Clerk, and City Treasurer, or to proceed with the November 3, 2026, general municipal election. The Council also conducted interviews and made appointments to five commissions. After discussion, the Council decided not to adopt the resolution, thereby allowing the election to proceed. Additionally, they appointed several commissioners.
Discussion Items
-
Appointment of Uncontested Candidates
The Council debated Resolution 1a to appoint the sole candidates for four offices. Several members argued that holding an election, despite the $170,000 cost, is important for voter engagement and public awareness. Councilmember Nicolas noted the budget was already allocated. Vice Mayor Nagales and Councilmember Coleman supported proceeding with the election. The Council ultimately took no action, allowing the November 3, 2026 election to proceed. -

Meeting Transcript
So reporting thank you for this Wednesday, August the 19th roll call. Councilmember Coleman? Here. Councilmember Flores? Here. Councilmember Nicholas. Present. Vice Mayor Nagales. Here. And Mayor Adiego. Here. Mayor. Moving on to public comments. We did not receive any public comments through our e-commons portal. And unless we have any speakers tonight. Present. Well, would anyone Lyndon? Are you sure you don't want to stand up and make the statement? No. Yeah, he's like, you know. That's good. Okay. If there are no speakers, we'll go into the first item. First item of administrative business is consideration of a resolution to appoint the only candidate for the office of City Council District 1. I should promote sorry. The Office of the City Council District 5, Edward Eddie Flores, the Office of City Clerk at Large, Rosa Covey Acosta, and the Office of City Treasurer at large, Frank Rezo, or to proceed with the general municipal election for all offices scheduled for November 3rd, 2026. Item 1A is the resolution. So we have a discussion. Let's let's get a motion a second on the floor and then we can discuss. We have a motion. Okay. You want to jump in? I do want to jump in. Okay. Um I think it's generally good that both that voters remember which offices are elected and which are not. And that they have a choice in these elections, even though they're uncontested. I just think it's a good practice for both to meet their future uh council representative or treasurer city clerk on the ballot. Well, I'm in 100% agreement with you. I have a real problem with going down this road. Um I'd like to save 170,000 whenever I can, but it is budgeted, and especially in the case of uh a new candidate who has not had any exposure in the public. I mean, I'm certain she has a circle of friends and she's well known uh on commissions, but but for the vast amount of the public, they have no awareness, and so she enters for the job um without the benefit of having put her name out there for um or the decision considered, and and I guess that would include no opportunity to have a candidate statement out there to kind of you know run down what's important to her and why she's running. Um, last time four years ago, I was certain that I wasn't gonna have a challenger, and that was kind of fun because it's good to get a pass once you're established, right? Sometimes and um and then I had a challenger and I worked very hard, and that was a good thing because it made me get out at this state of you know in my life to get out there and sell it again. Um I think it was important, and I met many people who I had never met in the previous five elections. So I'm with you. Okay, can I jump in? Uh Mr. Mayor, uh, I also agree with both of you. I think there's something like having someone vote for you, and it doesn't mean just because you're the only candidate, that person's gonna hell and I vote for you. Someone might skip that ballot as their as a as I do with judges.
