Um so first we'll start with just some facts about the Davis Pond diversion itself.

Uh it was constructed by the Corps between 1997 and 2002, and that's also when it began operations.

It's located on the west bank of Mississippi River in St.

Charles Parish, right here.

It's about uh at river mile 118 above Heda Passes.

The structure itself is composed of four culverts.

Um they're gated and they're about 14 feet by 14 feet.

The maximum discharge that can come through the diversion into the Barataria basin is 10,650 CFS.

Um, and the diversion's gravity-driven, meaning it functions best when we have a high river stage in relation to the water level in the basin.

So during the winter months, um during the spring when the river rises, that's when we can really pulse and operate the diversion uh most effectively.

So the outflow channel that you see in that photo, that flows into a ponding area.

It's about 9400 acres.

And the intent of that ponding area is to slow the water down a bit as it begins to enter the Barataria basin to allow for nutrient uptake to allow for sediment deposition to allow even for uh temperature um moderation uh within the ponding area.

Operations maintenance and monitoring is cost shared between the core and CPRA.

Uh core pays the majority at 75%, and CPRA pays 25%.

CPRA is responsible for managing diversion operations.

Charles Parish performs the actual day-to-day operations of the diversion structure.

And um they are also responsible for maintenance on the diversion structure as well, uh general maintenance on the structure as well as of um the other features that are associated with the project.

So this uh this picture shows the ponding area.

You can see the diversion and the top of the photo and then the outflow channel where the water then flows into the ponding area, flows south, and then enters um Lake Catawachi.

So we have a real-time flow gauge that's located at uh close to the end of the outflow channel there, um, where we can see real-time discharge from the diversion that's available uh online.

Anyone can see that at any time.

There's an East Guide levy and a West Guide levy that borders the ponding area, and those are intended to keep the water within the project area when we are flowing at a high discharge to make sure it doesn't overtop and go into neighboring communities or areas.

Additionally, there's a rock weir or gabion that is along the southern shore of the ponding area, and that was intended as well to slow the flow of water out of the ponding area.

However, we needed to make some gaps in that because early on it started to vegetate with trees or shrubs with vegetation on top, and that really impeded the flow of water out of the ponding area.
