Louis Health Department, Kim Spain for Civic Cervical Health Awareness Month.

Good morning.

My name is Kim Spain.

I'm a registered nurse.

I serve as public health nurse and regional program coordinator for the Show Me Healthy Women Program with the City of St.

Louis Department of Health.

I'd like to begin by thanking the City of St.

Louis Board of Aldermen and Women for the invitation and the opportunity to speak today about an issue that directly affects the health of the women across our city.

January is cervical cancer awareness month, an important time to focus on prevention, early detection, and support for girls and women in St.

Louis.

Regular screening and vaccinations make cervical cancer one of the most preventable cancers.

Awareness is the first step in protecting cervical health.

Most cervical cancers are caused by the human papillom papilloma virus or HPV, which is very common.

Regular screenings, such as PAP test and HBV tests, detect changes early, often before cancer develops.

Preventative care gives women the best chance to stay healthy, and we want every woman to know the importance of keeping up with the recommended screenings.

Protecting cervical health isn't just for women today.

Helps protect children from certain cancers later in life.

Although vaccinations can be started as early as age nine.

Here in St.

Louis, certain zip codes, including 63102, 63103, 63106, 63107, 63108, 6311, 63116, and 63118.

These challenges can include limited nearby health care options, transportation barriers, lack of insurance, difficulty taking off work.

Recognizing these disparities allows us to focus on resources and outreach efforts where they're where they are needed most.

For women who face barriers to care, there is a local resource called Show Me Healthy Women.

This program is offered in the city of St.

Louis and the state of Missouri, providing free breast and cervical cancer screenings to eligible women, including PAP tests, and follow-up diagnostic services when needed.

It also provides transportation vouchers to assist women in reaching their appointments.

By removing financial insurance and transportation barriers, the program gives women in our city the opportunity to access preventative care close to home.

Support is our second pillar.

Receiving a cancer diagnosis, an abnormal test, or even just worrying about your health can feel overwhelming.

Support means compassionate health care providers, clear guidance about next steps, and encouragement from family, friends, and community members.

No woman should face these challenges alone.

Finally, outreach.

Outreach is how we close these gaps.

The City of St.

Louis Department of Health works with clinics and community partners to connect women in neighborhoods with higher barriers to services like Show Me Healthy Women, and to ensure, and this is to ensure that cervical cancer prevention reaches every part of our city.

This cervical cancer awareness month, we encourage women in St.

Louis to discuss screening options with a health care provider, explore programs like Show Me Healthy Women, and share this information with others.

Through awareness, support, and outreach, we can prevent cervical cancer, protect the health of women across the city of St.

Louis, and give the next generation a stronger start in life.

Again, his daughters, his extended family through his um very good friends and community grandchildren.

And then for my last and I guess last but certainly not least.

Louis City Fire Department is having their promotions, 27 promotions today.

Um, but what I want to note today is that three of the promotions today are African American women, which out outnumbers the history of African American promotion women that have been promoted in the city of St.

Louis and our fire department.

So congratulations to all 27 of you.

I can't wait to get down there and cheer and root for you.

This is history making.

Thank you for the people that are in leadership now that chose these intentional steps um to do this.
