So we're gonna start today by presenting the library's 2023 last year's annual report.

Um after that, Deputy Director Amitha L'Onial will be telling you about what we hope to accomplish in the next year.

So at the library, when we are planning our work for the coming year, it's our mission and our strategic priorities that shape the framework of those plans.

So our mission is that we empower our community by bringing people together to discover, connect, create, learn, and thrive.

We have five strategic priorities equity and access, learning, creativity and innovation, investment in youth, cultivate and engage community, and responsible and resilient.

So starting with equity and access, uh, this slide is highlighting our partnership with Tacoma Needle Exchange.

So in our efforts to address the opioid crisis in our community, since February of last year, we've been able to supply the public with free naloxone.

But the special vending machine you see pictured at the right of this slide is at our Moore Library.

Um, anything in it is free.

This just allows us to dispense the doses in a measured way.

Um, through this location alone, each month last year, we supplied an average of 300 naloxone doses to the public, and consequently have had community members reporting reversal of overdoses.

Um so there was little doubt, but we know this service is making a difference.

We also know that there's a very real risk and fear of fentanyl, and this vending machine now also dispenses fentanyl testing strips as well.

Also, as part of this partnership, the TNE uh provides peer navigation services a few hours a month in two of our locations.

This helped us bridge a critical service gap last year while we worked to hire an onboard our first on-staffed social worker who started in January 2024.

Um, as part of this service, TNE was able to connect, for example, um, one family who a family of two who was expecting a child that had been on housed for nearly a year.

Um they were able to connect them to not just permanent housing but to employment.

City of Tacoma Council Study Session: Joint Meeting with Library Board and Urban Design Review Debrief - April 30, 2024
