in the Grand Lodge Food Pantry.

Whereas Ken Hayes Senior has remained a steadfast presence within the City of Toledo organization since beginning employment in the year two thousand.

And whereas after graduating from Rogers High School and pursuing additional technical and engineering education, Ken rose through the ranks to eventually become a foreman responsible for managing department special projects and the oversight of our demolition program, along with the illegal dumping, blight control, street sweeping, pothole repair, and more.

Whereas from an early age, Ken became rooted in community service, helping to serve food at his family's church.

His journey led him to work with the Masonic Lodge's community give back events.

And through this partnership, he eventually went on to become the director of the Grand Lodge Food Pantry, which has been instrumental in providing food to those in need across Toledo.

And whereas the Grand Lodge Food Pantry and its dedicated volunteers, the majority of which are City of Toledo employees, has grown its outreach to serve roughly sixty five hundred to seventy-two hundred people and providing up to twenty-eight thousand meals annually, all the while guided by the mission to ensure that no one in our community will go hungry.

Now, therefore, be it resolved by the Council of the City of Toledo that Ken Hayes Sr.

is hereby recognized for his dedication to Toledo and its residents, and the Grand Lodge Food Pantry is recognized for its unwavering commitment to making a difference in the Toledo community.

Recognizing next Natasha Howard in celebration of Black History Month.

You and your wife.

Resolution 46-26, sponsored by Council members McPherson, Williams, and Gaddis, recognizing Natasha Howard in celebration of Black History Month.

Whereas Black History Month is a time to recognize, celebrate, and honor the achievements, contributions, resilience, and excellence of African Americans who have shaped our nation, our communities, and our future.

And whereas Natasha Flash Howard, born September 2nd, 1991, in Toledo, Ohio, in a graduate of Wade High School, has been chosen to be celebrated for her achievement as a decorated professional basketball player who has made a lasting impact on the sport nationally and internationally.

And whereas a proud Florida State University alumna, Natasha has become one of the top talents in women's basketball and had her number retired by FSU in 2025.

And whereas the daughter of Anthony Scoop Williams and Latasha Howard, Natasha developed a relentless work ethic and passion for the game early in life.

Traits that propelled her to success on basketball's biggest stages.

Whereas Natasha was selected fifth overall in the first round of the 2014 Women's National Basketball Association draft by the Indiana Fever and has built an outstanding professional career spanning over a decade in the WNBA, including playing with the Dallas Wings.

And whereas throughout her career, Natasha Howard has achieved extraordinary success, including WNBA championships with the Minnesota Lynx 2017 and the Seattle Storm 2018 and 2020.

And whereas internationally she has won multiple Euro League titles and earned Turkish Championship MBP honors, further cementing her legacy as an elite global competitor.

And whereas Natasha's individual honors include WNBA defensive player of the year, most improved player, multiple WNBA All-Star selections, all defensive team honors, and becoming the third player in the WNBA franchise history to record a triple double.

And whereas beyond her athletic achievements, Natasha is committed to giving back to the community through coaching and mentorship, serving as an assistant with amateur athletic union king of the court, helping develop the next generation of athletes through skill building, discipline, and leadership.

And whereas Natasha credits her development to the foundation built through Toledo's youth sports community, including time spent training at Wilson Park and learning under respected local coaches, including Elmore Sturdevant, Gerelle Coleman Sr., Howard Hicks, Manny May, Coach Sue, Coach Brooke, and Coach Dane.

And whereas Natasha Howard's journey reflects excellence, perseverance, community pride, and serves as an inspiration to young people across Toledo and beyond, especially during Black History Month, when we honor those whose achievements continue to break barriers and create opportunities for future generations.

It is with exceeding joy to present you with this res this recognition during Black History Month.

Your journey, I am sure has not been easy.

Um I just wanted to make a correction um for the housing and community development and public health committee on the calendar says 3 30, but it's actually at 4 o'clock.

We'll be um discussing the permanent supportive housing issue that's been happening and affecting a lot of our um organizations, especially on the federal level when it comes to funding and seeing the state of what's going on uh right now.

So I hope that you all can make that and also give some commentary um in order to help them try to navigate and just learn more about of what's happening right now, especially dealing with the housing situation.

I think it's a resounding message that comes from us when we all unanimously vote in favor of something, and we did so today on the reaffirming um our welcoming status as a community, and I think right now it's important to to do such things.

I think it just really highlighted how incredible uh folks are that live here and that they should be celebrated.

Um I also last week attended interviews at the law school with Clerk Gibbons because we'll have some summer interns.

Really need uh you all to help identify maybe some work that you might be able to have for them.

So if you have any research or anything uh that you've been thinking about legislation you've been thinking about, send those to Clerk Gibbons, please.

Um we're deliberating if we should get two interns or three.

And I think three is always better.

Um and last, I want to thank uh the water crew that responded to the water main break um in the old west end.

Um I got calls about that starting around nine o'clock when it was already frigid, and then I found out that council president Williams actually went out there and braved the cold.

But the crew that was out there really had to brave a lot of gold and stand in a lot of water, and we're grateful to all of our crews that do that work to make sure we can have good clean water delivered to everybody's house.

Um we passed two uh very important resolutions today, the store at safe resolution, which we talked about last week a lot, um, and also the welcoming community uh resolution.

I mean it is so important that our community members feel safe in our community and they feel valued by their city government.

So I also think it's very important that we pass such resolutions.

Um also I wanted to say kudos to Rep Elgin Rogers, who held um the Difference Makers uh Black History Month celebration on Sunday at St.

Mark Missionary Baptist Church.

It was an excellent event.

There was a lot of performers there, and there were also uh multiple difference difference makers who were um honored that day, and it was just a great event, and I just wanted to give some kudos to Rep Rogers because that was it really brought a lot of people from the community together on Sunday, and you know, that's important on this Black History Month.

We we need to be um recognizing our um black uh citizens and all of their accomplishments.

Um, thank you, colleagues, for supporting the sort the store it safe um resolution.

Um definitely one of the tools in the toolbox that we need to um start combating some of this uh violence against um youth and the access that they have to um loaded firearms.

Um you know it's gonna be warmer weather as we see today, it's like a little taste of spring, so just be careful uh out there and make sure that you are paying attention to uh motorcycles.

Unfortunately, there was a uh man who lost his life uh at the roundabout uh at Cherry and um and Berdan that whole uh roundabout, and um so our our thoughts are with him and his family um as they kind of navigate that.

Um I was just really happy to see the Chinese uh uh dancers here today.

Uh you know, there's a lot of different pockets of individuals who call Toledo home, and the the best thing about this community, I think, is that we celebrate them all.

We celebrate everything, and so I am just really happy to be a part of this community.

Um over the weekend I was contacted by a friend of mine that her uh 98-year-old grandmother uh did not have water, and um they could not move her to have her access water uh because she was so frail.

So I called on uh deputy mayor Arnold and um she was able to get a crew out um to the location in District 6, and the water was back on in a few hours.

So uh this is one of the things that we do at the city is that we respond as quickly as we can and we help our citizens, and I am so thankful it was on a Sunday.

Um the crew had to come in.

Um, and so just thankful for our quick acting employees and specifically Deputy Um Arnold.

Um next Sunday I am attending the St.

And Martin DePora's uh Black History concert.

Um it is with the Toledo Symphony.

If you have never been to this concert, you are missing out.

They've had it uh since the beginning of time.

I think they only missed maybe I don't know if they even missed during COVID.

I mean, they they they are just very proud to host this every year.

And um, if if you can, it is a wonderful event.

It's at five o'clock on Sunday, I think it's the 22nd, um, so at St.

Martin DePora.

Uh I just want to say as well, thank you to all members who supported the uh Stuart Safe Initiative.

This is a step in the right direction, and we're gonna um you know, we're not just declaring it today, we're gonna keep keep working on this, and we have people assigned um on our team with the administration to keep working on this.

And I just I I also wanted to share because everybody had a a lot to say about my brother's full head of hair last week.

But this is a survey of 2,000 women showed that 87% of women say they find a bald head more attractive.

And it's not just the look of a clean shave.

2012 study from the Wharton School of Finance found that men with shaved heads were perceived to have higher masculinity than other men.

In fact, photos of men with digitally removed hair were rated as more dominant, stronger, and taller than their unaltered photos.

She has done some amazing things.

The resolution to endure do her justice because she is an amazing young woman.

So I definitely want to send condolences.

He's always there for me.

So even when I didn't want him to be, he's there.

So he's a good guy, and I appreciate him.

Also, definitely had a big major loss to the black community today.

Um Reverend Jesse Reverend Jesse Jackson.

Um I know the mayor, he has a story about Jesse Jackson that had me on the floor rolling.

But I'll let him tell y'all that story.

But I appreciate uh what he brought because because of him and the work that he did and the work that he kept doing, um, he helped black workers on a whole different level.

He actually was a advocate for workers and workers that look like me.

He ran for president.

Um he just did so much that if not for him, I would not be here.

And uh and a lot of shoulders that we stand on.

As uh as I said, um black history is very important to me, and I'm glad that this council um allows us to um definitely highlight different communities, even though we don't all look alike, we are all brothers and sisters, and we have to fight for each other.
