The Animal Shelter Advisory Committee met on June 19, 2025 at 1:03 PM at Weatherford City Hall. All members except Jenni Day (who arrived later) were present, constituting a quorum. Staff presented updates on shelter renovations, operations, and outreach programs, and the committee discussed potential uses for the shelter's donation account.

Staff Reports
Shelter Operations Update (Kenzie Redington, Animal Services Manager)
- Renovation phase one nearly complete: exterior of kennels A and B resurfaced, fiberglass reinforced panels installed, lighting, mini splits, and drop ceilings added. Cat room B and washroom expected to finish by June 24, 2025. Buildings D, E, and Q: HVAC serviced, kennel doors modified with solid metal panels to reduce stress and disease spread, painting done, floors ground and scheduled for new floors by June 27, with move-in first week of July. Phase two will include administration building, intake office, and central bark.
- Rooster Seizure: On April 6, 2025, 96 roosters from a suspected cockfighting operation were rescued with the Parker County Sheriff's Office and the Animal Investigation and Response team (AIR). Outcomes: 18 placed with rescue, 14 adopted, 2 deceased upon arrival, 62 humanely euthanized. The live release rate is expected to drop to approximately 85% due to this case.
- Second Quarter Statistics (April–May 2025): 1,845 animals served (21/day), 443 adoptions, 193 return to owners, 223 rescue pulls, 576 trap-neuter-return (TNR) and barn cats, 2,200+ volunteer hours, live release rate of 92.62% (rounded to 93%). Medical: 6,200+ vaccinations and medications, 1,155 spay/neuter surgeries, 740 microchips.
- Free Microchip Week: June 24–28, 2025, no appointment needed.
- Donation Account Discussion: Committee suggested a covered concrete walkway from the office to the kennels and a new mobile adoption trailer (current one is over 20 years old). Staff will bring a formal agenda item for donation account ideas at the next meeting.
Whisker Wednesday Program (Dr. Stacy McLeod, Shelter Veterinarian)
- TNR program continues during kitten season. Goal of 100 cats per event has not always been met due to weather, but the yearly total may still reach 1,000. Long-term population control is expected to take 5–10 years. The program also offers an alternative for citizens to keep and fix their cats rather than surrendering them.
Career Day Outreach (Levi Leal, Animal Services Coordinator)
- Visited three elementary schools (Igrid, Crockett, and Sagine) in the past month. Educated students on shelter services, lost pet reunification, vaccinations, and the role of the shelter in the community.
Recent and Upcoming Events (Amber Wilson, Outreach and Engagement Officer)
- Participated in the Dallas Mega Adoption Event in April 2025 (over 700 animals adopted total, including 3 from Weatherford). Invited to another similar event in Fort Worth in August 2025, hosted by Humane Society North Texas. Held a vaccination clinic with 104 vaccinations administered. MSNBC interviewed staff at the Dallas event, featuring Weatherford Animal Services.
Happy Tails (Amber Wilson)
- Adoption success stories: Mona (renamed Luna) adopted by City staff; S'mores, adopted six years ago, traveled with a military family across Europe (Italy, Croatia, Slovenia) and now lives in New Mexico; Kit Kat, adopted in February, lives happily with a family and other former shelter pets.

I am the Animal Services Manager for the City of Weatherford, and I appreciate all of you being here today with us.
